AAP for Westgate ES?

Anonymous
My son is rising 3rd grade, and we are thinking to move to McLean Commons apartment with the base school of westgate ES. I am wondering if he could get into AAP, will he go to Haycock AAP (it used to be Haycock) or some other AAP? Then, which one?

Thank!

The talk is that Westgate AAP kids, at least rising third graders, will go to a new AAP center at Lemon Road ES next year, but that hasn't been formally decided yet.

Most likely it will be Lemon Road or a rising 3rd grader. The final vote will come on January 24th

In the Wash Post a few days ago, there was an article about Tysons redevelopment and it was noted that the Commons of McLean complex may be razed to build high rises. That would make that area very congested, but would be a boom for Safeway.

Thank you all for nice replies. That's really nice of you.

Then, I am not sure about this type of new AAP class/center thing. From other parents, I was told that Westbriar will have their own new AAP class, but somehow only two teaches who have about 6-month training for AAP, and most likely, the classes will be somewhat mixed: AAP kids and non-AAP in the same class but with different learning contents......not sure how that will work.

The proposal from December 20 is on BoardDocs:

http://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/934PVL66774B/$file/New%20proposal%20for%20AAP%20centers%20-%20Updated%20Dec%2018-2012.pdf

There may be another proposal (?) and more may be learned at the January 14 work session. The School Board vote is scheduled on January 24.

FCPS staff support implementing the recommendations of the Spring 2012 advanced academic program (AAP) Task Force:
To establish at least one elementary AAP center in each pyramid, and an AAP center in every FCPS middle school;
Create and align a K-12 continuum of advanced academic services in all pyramids in order to provide equity of access to all students;
To provide immediate relief to overcrowding in the AAP Centers at Louise Archer, Hunters Woods and Haycock Elementary Schools, staff recommendation is to open new Level IV Advanced Academic Centers at Lemon Road, Westbriar, and Navy elementary schools fall 2013;
Additional elementary and middle school AAP centers should be opened over time to implement the recommendations of the AAP Task Force.
Recommendations:

That the School Board authorize the establishment of new advanced academic program (AAP) centers in fall 2013 at Lemon Road, Westbriar, and Navy Elementary Schools, for the purpose of relieving severe overcrowding at Haycock, Louise Archer, and Hunters Woods Elementary Schools; and further move that the new center placements begin at grade 3 and the rising 4th, 5th and 6th graders will stay at their current AAP centers (“grandfathered”).

That the School Board continue to explore, via thorough analysis and discussion with stakeholders, the expansion of AAP elementary and middle school centers with a goal of potential openings in fall 2013 at the following schools: Silverbrook Elementary, Cooper Middle, Herndon Middle, Thoreau Middle, and South County Middle.

The Commons of McLean will be raised to build high rises. It's actually quite a nice project compared to some of the other Tysons projects coming forward.

Why do you think there may be yet another proposal? There have been several already. Can't they make up their mind? Clearly this is not ready to be implemented. Parents are so confused.

Because the School Board Chairman stated that there may be another proposal and amendments offered by the School Board members. You may wish to watch video from the December 10 work session to see what was said:

Please remember that the recommendations have been offered by FCPS staff, not by the School Board.

I'm sure it'll be nice, but gone will be the quiet feel of the area. Surely, the roads will be much more congested.

No kidding, but that decision was made several years ago when the County decided to rezone everything in Tysons to much higher densities. You should have spoken up then like many of us to say the density they were proposing was too high. Since the density is already decided, I'm happy that at least some of the projects will hopefully look nice and provide some amenities.

But Commons belongs to Cluster I (Mclean HS pyramid), I am not so sure whether the APP kids should still go to Haycock or not.

AAP will follow the elementary school if it's a split feeder.

There is also talk of a local level IV at Westgate so he may not need to go anywhere different to get those services.

Hummmmmm.....Lemon Road is the new AAP Center, but with the establishment of Local Level IV at Westgate and Shrevewood - will there be a critical mass? Doubt it - sounds like the start of the end of the Center program - you should speak up now if you want to maintain Centers....the kids that suffer at the ones in weak local schools - they will miss their opportunity - is that fair and equitable?
