The non ECNL teams in an ECNL club are just bottom teams for revenue purposes. ECNL will attract a lot of trapped players from local clubs after the change |
Wouldn’t make things complicated if implemented at the ECNL level first. Right now MLSN has players bioband and play down nobody is confused. But US Club and USYS teams would just mandate a later start date. More than likely 26/27 Fall if they think Fall 25 is too soon. |
This is being discussed because it’s what they think is best for the bottom level teams which make up the majority. Obviously ECNL thinks it’s best for them as well. The change will happen for everyone more than likely over a 2 year timeframe. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the vast majority go with new cut offs for fall 25. Clubs will probably promise their better player they will not mess with teams if players stay and they will slowly start adding in a few older kids from the same grade. Just a guess though. |
| If the change is going to happen, there isn’t a lot of upside to delaying it to 2026/27. |
I agree will only make things more challenging for tournaments and getting started with a new era of youth soccer. But I could see some of the larger leagues ask for 2 years. |

I could see a situation where GA stays BY. Then US Soccer, NWSL, and GA implement NWSL Next based on BY.
Like MLS Next with bio banding it wouldn't matter if NWSL Next was BY or SY. But, it would force the top ECNL players (that would like to participate in NWSL Next) to play up because of BY instead of playing down because of SY. This would give GA players an advantage when competing for NWSL Next roster spots. |
We are years away from that happening. But would be great for girls to have a pathway to the pros if that’s what they wanted to pursue. ECNL has a strong hold on the girls market especially for college recruiting and the majority of girls will want to pursue college before going attempting to go pro. |
I hope GA stays birth year. My daughter has a December birthday and plays ECNL and GA can play her school grade for ECNL and play up with GA. Get the best of both worlds. |
I don't know about that. ECNL and US Soccer (and GA, MLSN) are going to continue fighting against each other. |

Something girls parents don't know about MLSN is that multiple clubs have tried to position MLSN as their top boys club team and ECNL as their 2nd tier club team.
When this happens ECNL usually boots that clubs boys ECNL teams from their league. ECNL also uses taking girls ECNL away as leverage for teams that reconsider joining MLSN. If NWSLN became viable there would be clubs that would happily switch their boys programs fron ECNL to MLSN and girls teams to NWSLN. |
MLSN players get recruited to colleges above ECNL players on the boys side. Everyone knows that NWSLN is in the cards and that US Soccer is just waiting for the right time to play it's hand. |
|
This is simply hard to believe. The NWSL has no money. They can barely pay livable wages to the majority of players. So if they can’t afford it it means someone has to subsidize this. US Soccer? Call me VERY skeptical. I would love it but not holding my breath until I see a P&L that supports it. I am old enough to remember the debacle that was DA and it was not pretty. A total rug pull. |
Maybe but you have to admit that on the boys side ECNL is flailing and has pissed a lot of people off. |
Yes. ECNL boys is to MLSN what GA is to ECNL on the girls side. Too bad everyone can’t work together instead of solving for money instead of what is best for youth soccer in the us. |
