The cloths they are selling look like wrinkled Raulph Lauran shirts and shorts, without the high end designs. I do not get it. |
I'm from the CT area where their HQ is located. In the early 2000s when they were really just ties and polo shirts, it was all about being "in the know" - I.e., you either recognized the whale logo as prestigious like the polo pony or Lacoste alligator, or you had no clue. They did a ton of custom work with local country clubs and yacht clubs, so you either knew them from there, or from your summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard. Very niche and the catalog makes it clear they are trying to sell the ultimate preppy/WASP lifestyle.
They got popular through the sorority and fraternity circuit and IMO that's their real target now. Back in the day, you'd see people of all ages sporting the whale. Now it's really just the ties that cross generations. Well...a few old ladies at my parents' club still wear the patchwork "tie" skirts, and I will admit to breaking out my tote bag every once in awhile. But when I do, I feel very 2006. My brothers, who are in college and young 20s still dress head to toe in the stuff, but my husband has pretty much aged out, though he will still wander into the store every once in awhile. |
PP has it largely right. I have some very plain VV clothing - cashmere v-neck sweaters for example - that I wear quite regularly but generally the more colorful VV stuff I have is reserved for our summer house. My DH wears the ties all the time.
It is still very big on the custom side - many schools and most colleges have custom ties and totes. |
VV ties are a good choice for boys in middle school and early HS. Our sons, now in college, stopped wearing them once they hit junior year. (And they are not fashionista guys, by an means!) |
Its pretty popular with the Junior League/country club set at our school. Most of these women were previously sorority members of course. |
Preposterous preppy pretension. |
Lilly and Lacoste rip-off. |
Everyone wears this preppy rubbish and it's the oddest thing. I don't get it the least bit either. |
I don't get it either. It seems very casual? |
Now that they have a store at DCA, they are over. |
Adults have no business wearing it. My 17 year old son loves it though. |
This was a thread from 2012.... |
It's like country music -- a product for white people. |
Clothing for preppy tools. |
Uh, it's supposed to be? It's mostly resort wear. The motto is "the good life", which involves sun, water and boats, not downtown office buildings. |
