What is the big deal about Vineyard vines?

Anonymous
I do not get this company. I saw a family friend's 20 year old son wearing it the other day and my husband I both commented after about why would any 20 year old college kid want to convey a country club message to the world. Weird. In my world, college is about independence and freedom and figuring yourself out. Not about sending a message that your parents have money. And I don't say that in a "the 1% suck" kind of way. I mean I really can't fathom a 20 year old wanting to give off a country club message. And the stuff isn't even expensive - so it's not like you're sending a "I'm rich" message.

Inquiring minds want to know how you found this ancient thread and why you felt compelled to comment on it.

Seriously? I wore those kind of clothes in college. Not vineyard vines of course because it didn't exist, but Pappagallo, Carroll Reed, Lilly, LL Bean, etc. It was pretty commonplace then, just as VV is pretty commonplace on many college campuses today. Not all kids need to look like slobs in college.

LOL! My DH is a WASP but I am not. Just realized that he owns some of these ties, but I never knew because I hadn't even heard of this brand. The only times I go to resorts is when I am with my in-laws, who are kind enough to overlook the fact that I know nothing of the life.

Not look like slobs. But definitely discover your own fashion sense. VV is the opposite of fashionable. But I guess different colleges have different vibes. I went to school in a fairly major city. If someone showed up in a VV equivalent back then, people would have assumed it was for a costume party!

Uh, it's supposed to be? It's mostly resort wear. The motto is "the good life", which involves sun, water and boats, not downtown office buildings.

I guess I still don't wear knits on vacation.

I’m 48 and I wear their shirts because I like whales and comfortable clothing. That’s it. Nothing more; nothing less.

Hilarious attempt to claim old money cachet by a company founded by a couple of frat boys in 1998.

I think their ties are great.

My prep school has one of the first VV school ties.

Agree it's now for the frat scene...but they do still make nice ties!
