Why not just be who you are, even if that’s someone who loves Spain and Spanish culture and the language? That’s all fine if you like it! You don’t have to pretend to be from there. Just be you.

Someone earlier said that if Hilary had just said that as a child she vacationed frequently in Spain and fell in love with the culture, we all might think it's kind of odd, but would have accepted it.

She’s a Spancophile, nothing wrong with that really is there? People are obsessed with all different things.

Yes. And her family does live there, so she visits frequently and plans teaching her kids about it and so on. NBD. But instead she perpetuated this myth, only for it to come crashing down.

Read the room. People have repeatedly stated why her lying about her background is problematic.

I think the word is Iberophile (I looked it up earlier)? Spancophile sounds like someone who loves Spanx.

She went to grade school, high school, and college in the US and English is her native language. Why she would have an accent, even if she has a Spanish relative and spent time in Spain, makes zero sense.

And lest we forget Alex proposed on Long Island because it was the closest he could get to Spain:

Her accent comes and goes big time:

Her parents retired to Spain the year before the first video. And she’s up in there acting like they had been living there forever.

Because, for whatever reason, she is deeply insecure. She did not think she was good enough or interesting enough without this lie. It’s sad but it’s still wrong to lie and it’s still a product of entitlement and privilege to think you can or should do something like this, even if you are otherwise a nice person.

Or someone who likes spankings.

Why didn't she do her two instagram testimonies in Spanish?! What happened? Cat got her tongue? She should have done her instagram testimony in Spanish then English but she didn't because her play acting accent and elementary proficiency proves she's a scammer. She still struggles to fess up to it all because it would likely prove their courting and marriage is built on lies. Sad. Feel sorry for all involved.

I mean, Alec’s been made a fool of very publicly by her. Everyone knows that he fell for a scammer and then continued to be hypnotized for a decade while she carried out a false identity. I'm sure he's had doubts in the past. So he's protecting her to protect himself.

That said, her crime is a serious misdemeanor and not a felony. He could easily recover down the road by saying we've all done something to impress someone, and it is what it is, but she's a good person and they are moving on, imiting paella to once a week now. They are melting down like it's the end of the world and intimidating people. It's really unbecoming.

Smart post, exactly how it should be handled but this is neither's way.

She is a huge under-achiever. She had to make something up to appear interesting.

She's a young millennial. Mass media has brainwashed and bullied her demo that being a beautiful white girl is 'basic' 'Becky' 'Karen' 'boring' 'dorky'. Media and society now promotes and rewards persons of color. She did it because it being a POC in 2010-2020 helped advance her life.

Oh, yes, because impersonating a a Spanish woman is very impressive.

This. Mom and dad were an accomplished MGH doctor and a lawyer. She didn't really have a "thing"--be it a clear identity or profession--so she took this on. Sad, really.

I thought she was a successful yoga instructor? Owned a studio or something? Is that all a lie? I would have assumed she was making six-figures -- obviously not millions, but NYU alum in her late 20s making six-figures is hardly unimpressive.
