| First Christmas party of the season is tonight and I thought I'd give red lipstick a try, to be festive or whatever. I have blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes, so I found a nice blue-based red and gave it a shot last night. I really didn't think it looked that bad, but my DH told me I looked like The Joker. He's pretty conservative in dress and styling, so I can't tell if this is just his natural conservatism speaking or if it did look garish and bad. What say DCUM? Is red lipstick during the holidays a go? Or does it look trashy? (Assuming other makeup is light and neutral; I'm not rocking a bunch of rouge and body glitter and false eyelashes along with the red lipstick.) |
| I think it looks clownish. Only appropriate as stage makeup, or models doing runway shows. Something where you need to look dramatic to the point of garish. |
| I don't think it would be a good idea. Red lipstick isn't flattering on most people |
| Red lipstick with light makeup is what everyone is wearing this season. The little jolt of color takes some getting used to, so that is probably what your husband is responding to. I like the look, but you have to wear it with confidence. |
| I wear red lipstick during the day, seven days a week. It's my trademark. I think it's just that your DH isn't used to it on you. |
What's your coloring, and what is your best feature? My lips are my best feature and I'm not overly fair skinned. Love the way my lips look with red on them. |
| I like it quite a bit, but wouldn't do it every day. Red dye is supposed to be one of the more toxic colors. |
My lips are also my best feature, and I'm a pretty typical euro brunette. I tan easily. My lips are shapely and naturally dark. I never wear lipstick at all. Eyes, now... I need some help there. They're a little small and puffy. |
| Maybe the trouble is you aren't using the right shade. I think red lipstick is gorgeous on just about anybody but each person requires a different red to suit their complexion. |
|
OP has blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. It will not be a good look.
And just because it's a trend doesn't mean everyone should do it. Skinny jeans anyone? |
|
There's a red for everyone. This is one of those colors where you need to go to a makeup counter or sephora or a MAC store and try a few different ones to find the right shade for you.
If you don't feel comfortable wearing it though, it probably isn't a good choice for you. Like one of the other posters, my lips are one of my better features and it makes me feel powerful when I wear it. |

I think you have to have the right "look" for it. I wear it sometimes and have dirty blonde hair and fair skin, but I have really dramatic features with a small mouth and big eyes and forehead--so i think the strong lips for a festive occasion work. I usually do a high pony or bun and no cleavage. With big hair and boobs, it looks trampy on me.
If you look in the mirror and like what you see--rock it. Your DH will probably like it when you are dressed and your hair is done. |
| OP we have the same look and I wear red for events. Its not my daily SAHM look but for a night out it is perfect. Enjoy your holiday party! |

| I'm another clown in red lipstick. I'm too pale and even though I have white teeth, it makes them look yellowish. |
