Red lipstick: yea or nay?

You may want to try a lipstick that's less shiny...or just blot it down after you apply it so it's more like this and less like this

I love red lipstick, but you have to make sure you have a good shade. Head to a makeup counter and ask for their help. Maybe an orangey red would look better on you than a blue red.

Oh, 10:31 is right - OP, were using a glossy red or a matte red? Matte red is really in right now.

Yea. With the right outfit and event it looks great!

Ok, you don't look like Taylor Swift no matter how much red lipstick you smear on. You just look like Dottie: The Waitress at the Diner.

You need to be very young or have quite dark skin or just use the lipstick as a matte stain on your lips with a small amount of Burt's bees or something over, no gloss.

Many black women look great with red lips. Not so many very pale women.

Matte. Specifically, this one:

Which I read was universally flattering, particularly for those who are cool toned and have light hair and features. (And was also inexpensive in case I chickened out and didn't want to commit.) I have other lipsticks from this line and the texture is rich, which I like, and definitely more matte than gloss.

OP here. I'm young-ish- 28. And I'm not trying to look like Taylor Swift. More like Sienna Miller in this pic:

That's young enough! Right color and light application, no shine.

I'm 45, and that's the kind of red lipstick I wear.

People here are so conservative. I imagine a Caroline Bessette Kennedy type of thing (showing my age) - but it can be beautiful. Just not much makeup on eyes, and not too dark of a red.

You might have the wrong shade of red or wrong texture as some PPs have suggested, but I'd also take another look at the Siena Miller photo. She's got a bronzer on, plus black eyeliner and lots of mascara. This balances the dramatic lip color. Without it, her lips would look pretty stark.

Yes but only because she's being photographed by high intensity flashes on HD cameras. You have to have extra-heavy makeup for that. IRL, it probably looked extremely heavy. No way would I wear that much makeup in addition to the red lips. Mascara, yes, a tiny bit of eyeliner and a light sweep of blush, but definitely no bronzer or black eyeliner.

OP, I'm puzzled by the "no" responses. I'm sure it will look lovely on you. Marilyn Monroe had fair skin and blue eyes and she looked fantastically gorgeous with red lipstick. Just go to a makeup counter, or Sephora, and try on a bunch. You'll find the right one. Good luck!

You don't have to wear "extra-heavy"makeup, but "a tiny bit of eyeliner and a light sweep of blush" will not balance a red lipstick. That's why your DH said you looked like a clown.
