Are granite counter tops dated? What are people doing now?

Granite, granite, granite. Has it become passe? Love mine, but in next house what is the new thing?

Yes. Granite is dated. Marble, soapstone, quartz and concrete are all popular current choices.

I don't think so, granite is still popular and still love it.

True, granite is seen as more of a dated look but I don't think all granites are equal. Love marble but it's expensive, high maintenance and stains very very easily. Personally, I'd skip quartz and concrete. Given that soapstone was a popular countertop choice in the early 1900s, I see this as more of a classic. It does develop a patina over time so make sure you are ok with that.

If you want to go with granite, I'd recommend choosing a honed granite and avoid the shiny, overly polished stuff.

Granite is definitely dated. As I said in the other thread, it screams 2002.

I am in the process of buying a house with silestone counters... and I did not even KNOW what they were. They looked cheaper than granite to me, and my realtor kept insisting "No, no, these are a step up from granite!" and she's ESL so I had no idea what that meant. So I think most buyers are still looking for granite.

Remember how they used to say granite would last forever and be a "classic look"?

We have manufactured quartz counter tops (black with flecks), and a couple people have commented that they thought it was granite. I think that if you don't have a crazy color/grain of stone then it doesn't really matter. It's the big swirly stuff that can look dated.

You just contradicted yourself. The agent pointed out that it was superior material. It's not her fault you're behind the times.

Granite still rules if you have tight grain pattern.

I'm sorry you just invested in granite. It was a horrible investment. But there's no need to call me names. Please get help.

+1, the other counters people want are silstone or quartz which do their best to look like granite but are less maintenance. concrete or glass are fads that will die out soon.
