Am I going to regret white appliances?

Anonymous
When we bought out house the kitchen had white appliances. The cabinets are light wood, the counter tops are white, so the appliances blend in well.

We won't be even considering a major re-do of the kitchen for several years but we are to the point of having to replace appliances.

When the dishwasher broke I decided to replace it with another white one. The stove is relatively new and that's white so it seemed to make sense to keep it matching.

Now we need to replace the refrigerator and I guess we'll just go with white for that as well.

Am I going to regret this? Should I be switching to stainless? Really I guess I want someone to just tell me that white is timeless, always in style, etc. My old house had black appliances and I remember that was the "in" thing 15 years ago!

I hate my stainless steel appliances. Impossible to keep clean. I miss my black appliances. I would stick with white over stainless. You can always paint your cabinets and replace countertops rather inexpensively fwiw.

I would choose black or stainless over white.

Really, black? I feel like that is considered much more passe than white right now.

When you all refer to black and white appliances, do you mean the kind that has the texture to it or the newer lacquered black and white? Just wondering.

I like white and no regrets with ours.

I have all stainless steel one year old appliances and i never complain about keeping them clean. I don't understand why others complain about it. We have 3 kids and use the kitchen a lot and i have a cleaning done once every other week. They are higher end appliances - maybe that the difference.

Regarding white ones, i think they yellow as they age and start to discolor but i would pick that color over black. I think stainless looks the best (at least today).

Same here. Ours are bright and fine. Plus, the original owners put in a big, beautiful white ceramic sink, and that's not going anywhere, so the white appliances look much better with the sink than stainless would.

I have all stainless and I see no marks whatsoever. Guess the cleaners are doing a good job!

Mine are over 20 years old each and have not yellowed.

Personally, I'd choose stainless or black over white, but it is hard when you are replacing one appliance at a time. Do what you like, OP. Changing appliances is relatively inexpensive for a buyer (or you) to do in the home selling process.

My inlaws did just what you are doing and totally regret it now.

I think black looks better, too. I prefer black to stainless. Stainless is really on its way out.

I think what looks good really depends on the individual kitchen. I personally think white appliances look best if the cabinets are the same shade of white, though I can see it looking fine with light wood too. I don't like the look with medium or dark wood cabinetry. I also think we'll be seeing less stainless in kitchens now that it's standard fare.

I think it's personal preference. We had all stainless steel in our last house and I hated it. We have white in this house and so far, no complaints. I wouldn't like black.

Ditto. I can't stand stainless steel.
