| I'm really anxious to see if my child's elementary school is going to close. |
| gah. working from home and watching on the news - it's like they're refusing to name the schools. 2 minutes of news, with a closing that the list will be released at 4 pm. |
| It figures. Thanks for the update. |
| I seriously doubt if any of the schools that are set to be closed would be of interest to anyone on DCUM. |
| Will there be any indication of which school the kids from the closed schools will be going to? |
| Registration to testify at the Council hearing regarding school closures must be done by COB today. So if the list comes out an hour late--or if slots, which have been assigned on a first come/first served basis that began last week, are all taken--parents from closed schools will have no chance to testify in public (unless they're psychic, of course). |
Well, when our neighborhood school closed in the last round, we were told that our kids would be assiged to high-performng schools A or B, or middling schools C or D. When the actual decision was announced, kids were given the choice of middling school C or godawful school E (located a convenient mile from the closed school). |
Why the hell not? Go back in your bubble. |
| Ward 5 listserv says that Henderson was at Spingarn today to announce that it's closing. Not that you can believe everything you read on the Ward 5 listserv... |
|
I don't think you can believe anything from that listserv. It is truly an interesting snapshot.

| I am sorry if I sound naive, but really? they are closing schools? this is crazy! Why? budget resons? where will those kids go? this is terrible news! |
Why? Many schools are grossly underenrolled. Where will kids go? Kids will be assigned to nearby schools with open space. Surprisingly, the schools with the most space are those that are the most unpleasant/low-scoring, so motivated parents will instead send their kids to charters or apply to better schools through the out-of-bounds process. We already lost our neighborhood elementary school (closed in 2008), and I've refused to send my kids to the pit that they were reassigned to. My guess is that the pit school is also underenrolled and will be on the latest list of closures. So the kids on my block will be assigned to a worse school that's even further away from their homes, and if there are any who don't go to charters, they will soon enough. The process will repeat again 5 years from now. I predict only 1 school per east of the park quadrant by 2025. |
thank your for your response. I just went and google this and it seems that the excuse is low enrollment therefore no money for librarians, etc. Depressing

Here it is (without full details, which will be released at 4)
