Sprained ankle - what to expect

Anonymous
I sprained my ankle running last week. (stepped on a tree root and rolled it) I went to my podiatrist who diagnosed it as a grade 3 sprain. I am in a boot and on crutches, and I still can't put any weight on it. I am supposed to return for a recheck in 2 weeks...but in the meantime I don't know what to expect. The pain wakes me up every night multiple times and only the rx pain meds from the doc will touch it. It's much better during the day, but hurts a lot when I've been up for a while.

Anyone else who has been through this care to share your experience?

Once you have sprained an ankle, it will always be somewhat more prone to re-injury. I think the ligaments just don't heal well or something. So just bear that in mind with activities especially while you are healing. I have found that during the healing phase there is a fine line between exercising and strengthening it and re-injury.

Are you icing it? That helps me more than anything. GL!

I rolled it over summer. sprained medial deltoid ligament. Sucks. Took months to heal. Be very careful and do 100% rest (for ankle, swimming is ok) for 4-6 weeks before beginning pt.

In my case, being on crutches for a few weeks- ended up doing a little damage to non-effected knee, from putting all my weight on that leg w knee straight.

That was not a typo. 4-6 weeks at least.
