DP and I sure as hell want vouchers. I don’t think they destroy schools and I do think school choice is at least a step in the right direction. I’m a former IB public school teacher and I’d never want my kids going where I used to teach.

If you’ve never sent your kids to or worked in that kind of school, you don’t get it. You are living in your GS10 bubble. But I’ve seen some shit and I would do anything to give those kids a lifeboat out of there.

You think those kids will secure a spot at a private? Most won’t and the schools will continue to decline.

I think anything—ANYTHING—is better than where they are now. A charter that fails halfway through the school year. A 90 minute commute across town to a rich kid school. A parochial school. Anything.

You “liberals” are offering nothing but more money for the same failing staff. No thank you. I want to save the kid, not the school.

That is not what ‘outstanding factor’ means. They’re asking if it’s enough to effect the determination of the race and the answer is no.

I agree parents have had enough, but it’s not all about CRR and trans issues. Democrats closed schools for an entire year. People living in Virginia looked around at republican run states and saw their kids in school. With COVID not over and threats of new variants constantly talked about, no way do parents want another Democrat in charge.

Our area schools brought kids back in to the buildings around the same time as many other schools.

5-11 can get vaccinated within days.

Nope. When our kids went back in Feb/Mar there were many other schools (~40%) still transitioning back to school at the same time.

Am I misunderstanding what you’re saying or is 60% more than 40%?

It was constantly changing over a period of time. I’d have to look up exact numbers again but roughly:

Jan 2020 - >50% of US kids had only virtual option
Feb 2020 - ~40% only had virtual option (this is when some public schools in our area started sending back younger grades)
Mar 2020 - ~30% only has virtual option (all kids were back)

I’ve seen it and I don’t think vouchers are the answers. They leave the worst of the worst in public school rather than improving for all.

You realize not everyone who wants to go to the charter gets to, right? That it’s a lottery? So you just don’t care about the kids who don’t get in? The state I grew up in now has them and it has absolutely made the already bad public schools worse. And it’s the more resourceful parents that get their kids in. The ones who will be fine either way because their parents care. You aren’t helping the kids whose parents don’t care and they are the ones who need it.

I don’t claim to have all the answers. My mom was a teacher at a Title 1 school who saw a lot of shit too. A lot. But charter schools aren’t helping the school where she taught nor the other bad ones in that public district.

That is what matters now, not what McAuliffe would have done if elected. Can you address any of the substantive questions raised in the past couple of pages as to how Youngkin will achieve his stated policy goals?
