About 15 years ago I parked my car to go into a supermarket. As I left my vehicle, I noticed an older sedan next to me with a woman sitting behind the wheel and a girl of about six in the back seat. It looked like they had everything they owned in that car. When I left the store they were gone. I have always wondered, who were they? Where were they going? Did they have a place to go? Did they need help?
I know it sounds crazy, but I have never gotten this picture out of my mind. |
| Driving home late night in DC after going to a club and I saw an accident in front of me in the tunnel and someone flew out the back window upon impact. Looked pretty lifeless. |
| Saw a woman hit by a car near Friendship Heights about 15 years ago. Flew like a rag doll, shoes still where she was hit. Turns my stomach thinking about it. |

I was in a mall in South Florida. A little boy, maybe 7 or so, walked up to me, holding the hand of a boy I assume was his little brother, about 3 or 4, and asked if I could give them any change. I automatically said no as I always do, and they walked off but then I realized I should have stopped and talked to them. Where was their mother? Where did they live? Why did such a little boy know about begging? Why hadn't anyone else done what I should have done?
I was 23. It was 13 years ago. That older boy must be about 20 now, if he's still alive. |

As a police reporter in Georgia 20 years ago, I saw all kinds of ugliness, but the one that stands out is the freshly decapitated body on the railroad tracks.
That's bad enough, but the "never forgotten about it" feature was the fact that the body had a giant erection. (learned subsequently that that's not unusual, to get one in a sudden death. but the mental image of the headless body with a hard on? yes, that one's for a lifetime) |
| I was on the G2 bus when I was a Georgetown student. I saw an elderly woman scream at some school children for no reason, and then physically threw one of them down the aisle of the bus. She had deformed fingers on one of her hands. I'm sure she is dead by now. That was back in the 80's. |
| I was in the grocery store as an older teen. Two skinny parents pushing their morbidly obese son in the cart part of the cart. I'd guess he was about 4 but huge. He was asking for sugar cereal and parents were saying stuff like, "Shut up fat ass, eating that stuff is why you are a big fat fuck. Shut your damn mouth or I'll shut it for you." I was probably 18 and didn't know what to do so I did nothing and then sat in my car and cried when I left. |
| About 20 years ago, I was driving to work on the Southeast Southwest Freeway one morning and saw the male driver in front of me slug the female passenger. Just an outright punch. No cell phones then and the car drove away before I could get a license plate. It was so brutal. Never forgot it. |
| Pretty much every week. I am a criminal defense attorney so I see and hear stuff that is very hard to forget. |
| The first time I saw a cadaver in med school. I saw his face every time I closed my eyes for months afterwards. I still remember what he looked like. |
| I saw my PE teacher making out with an 8th grader in the locker room. I was in 6th grade. I'm haunted by that all the time, because the then 8th grader is now my facebook friend. She doesn't know that I know. |
| Had to treat a child in the hospital who was obviously being abused by the mom's boyfriend. He had all the classic symptoms, including several healed fractures that he hadnt received medical treatment for. But what has always stuck with me was the look of total fear in his eyes when the boyfriend showed up. The panic and desperation broke my heart. Obviously social services was involved, but I've wondered what happened to that kid and his mom. I suspected mom was being abused and I can only hope she was able to get somewhere safe before her boyfriend was released on bail. |
| I was on a 30s bus going up Wisconsin Ave in Georgetown. It was summer, but the bus had no AC so the windows were down. The bus was stopped at a light. On the sidewalk two young men were fighting, surrounded by other kids. There was a big commotion. One of the young men threw the other one to the ground, then literally stomped on his head. I screamed. People on the bus were screaming, "Call the police!" The light turned green and the bus took off. When I got home, I cried and cried. My eyes are tearing up just thinking about it. It was terrible. |
Holy cow! Whoa! That IS disturbing. |

The murder scene in "The Lovely Bones."
So many people thought that was a great book. The ending "resolution" was absolute crap and I didn't care about any of the characters, except the girl who died. The fact that she was murdered right next to her house, while her parents were calling out the door for her to come in for dinner, makes me cringe as a parent. I know it's fiction, but it's haunting. |
