FAQ: What is the "Big 3"? (or "Big 5", or "Big 10", etc)

Sidwell Friends, GDS and Maret.

I think the lists should be kept separate for coed vs single-sex schools.
St. Albans and NCS are universally regarded as the best boys' and girls' schools in this area (respectively), and I am sure there are several contenders for the other spots in the "top 3/5/10" etc.

I agree with this. Or make the Cathedral Schools one entity and put them in the Big 3 with Sidwell and GDS. I think Maret is on the bubble, maybe because they have such a strong sibling/alum/faculty preference within a smaller school that they have more kids that aren't at the very top of the achievement pyramid of admittees.

NCS anD STA shouldn’t be ranked separately as they are in most national rankings. NCS is usually ranked slightly higher than STA.

Maret is just not that strong. It’s gotten hooked on wealthy donor families and siblings maybe because it needs the money more than other private schools in the are due to its small size. I think of it as the school for nice, middle of the road kids with wealthy parents. Of course there are a few very bright ones mixed in.

Good luck to your daughter. Mine did great at Holton even though NCS sniffed there noses at her. Mine ended up at an Ivy.

Dr. Fauci (leading the Coronavirus fight, like he did with AIDs epidemic, Ebola, Zika) continually credits and thanks all of his Jesuit teachers for his intellectual rigor, work ethic and service.

I don’t care about lists. We felt the strongest overall education for our sons was a Jesuit one.

We chose Potomac over Sidwell and Beauvoir so our top 2 is obviously different than your claim of "everyone" above.

Harvard, Yale, and the Colorado School of Mines. If you want your daughter to be a well-prepared gold digger she has to understand the terrain.

The Big 9 DC Area Private High Schools in Alphabetical Order: Georgetown Day (C)oed), Georgetown Prep (U)nisex), Holton (U), Landon (U), Maret (C), National Cathedral (U), Potomac (C), St Albans (U), Sidwell (C)

Some would eliminate a couple from this list. Some would add their own institutions.

And in ranked order (arguable contenders):

1) Sidwell (St. Albans / NCS)
2) St. Albans / NCS (GDS)
3) GDS (Maret)
4) Maret (Georgetown Prep)
5) Georgetown Prep (Potomac)
6) Potomac (Holton / Landon)
7) Holton / Landon (Flint Hill / Episcop / St. Stephens St. Agnes / School without Walls)
8) Flint Hill / Episcop / SSSA / SWOW
