I think most of us who read the story assumed that at least one of the cops was Black, and probably both. That doesn't mean race wasn't a factor at key points in this story.

Police officers, even Black ones, work inside a system in which Black children are adultified and where abuse of Black kids is less likely to be reported or taken seriously. The individual officer doesn't need to be racist against the child for this to have racial implications. The cop can just be abusive, and have a sense that they will get away with it because the child is Black.

So, if its a white child, treat them however you want, including being abusive but if its a child of color, well, really only Black, you have to treat them differently and put them on a pedestal. You aren't doing kids any good treating them differently. There is a lot more to this story. Kids don't typically leave school.

I don’t understand why they are objecting to this part. The yelling and kid handcuffs are way out of line, but I take it with a grain of salt since they’re making a big deal about being “placed in a squad car”.

The kid wasn’t placed in handcuffs. While in the principals office it was suggested that the child feel what a handcuff looks like. It wasn’t more of a learning process. It was one handcuff and it was too large for the kids wrist.this is all lawyer bull crap.

The cops were not at the school and yes, they should be for safety from outside violence to violence inside. We had a bomb threat at our ES. The issue is they aren't trained mental health workers nor should be. The cops were called after a child eloped from school and given the child's age it was a safety issue. Lucky for this child he was found before something bad happened.

Not all cops are bad. Not all teachers are bad. Not all parents are bad. Every profession has its good and bad. These cops may have not been bad people and it may have been cultural or child was really acting up.

Regardless of this mother's race, which was brought up here, mom is looking for a pay out. If it were my child, I'd make sure he got mental health treatment, change my parenting and change schools for a better fit.

You are being racist. This hasn't gone to trial and we don't know the entire story. We do know we have a 5 year old who left school grounds. Its interesting she isn't suing MCPS nor taking any responsibility for her child's behavior. She's playing victim and suing for money. Her child may have been a victim at this school but there is no discussion on what happened that day at school to make this child react like he did.
