Wow, super agree with this entire comment. -MCPS policy seems problematic -Range of possible explanation for the school admin behavior, but most point at least to poor training/policies -Cops BY FAR are the most to blame I think one thing I've definitely taken from all this is that most elementary schools probably lose (or almost lose) kids for a hot second every year. But aside from the parent of that child, we don't hear about it, because those kids AREN'T SUBSEQUENTLY ABUSED BY COPS. There's little to no story without that. Still reserving the right to find ESS teachers and admins appalling, but I think it's more likely that at least the part about a kindergartner getting off campus could have happened at any school. |
Oh, totally right. Let's not treat the 5-year-old like a child... an entire 1-2 years younger! I'm sorry-- I'm being too glib. Let me know where you saw people saying that a typical 5 year old should leave school, should be expected to leave school, can't understand that they're not supposed to leave school, etc. Show me where people said the 5 year old's behavior was "acceptable." |
You are hearing one side of the story. The side from a woman looking for a payday. Let’s wait until we hear the other side. |
Gross. |
The kid wasn’t placed in handcuffs. While in the principals office it was suggested that the child feel what a handcuff looks like. It wasn’t more of a learning process. It was one handcuff and it was too large for the kids wrist.this is all lawyer bull crap. |
Ah, the Body Camera Footage Viewer has logged in! Tell us, what other proof of the cops' innocence is shown on the tape? |
This is why cops should never be in schools. This delusional cop on this thread will do anything to defend a colleague... this is why police abuse is never reported. Thin blue line is a racist organization that says don’t cross the blue line and snitch or you will not get back up. Cops have turned into a cult that can’t think for themselves. |
Kids aren't idiots. These kids were smart to know they could get away with it. They do have SN if they have behavioral issues and those behavioral issues may have stemmed from parenting. |
So, if its a white child, treat them however you want, including being abusive but if its a child of color, well, really only Black, you have to treat them differently and put them on a pedestal. You aren't doing kids any good treating them differently. There is a lot more to this story. Kids don't typically leave school. |
Not everything is racism or racist. Some of it is cultural and those police probably would have beat their own kids or would have been if they did that and its more cultural. Either way, its not the best plan. I've very much against spanking but would consider it in this situation where its a safety issue. There is way more to this. There was a clear lack of supervision at the school and many other things for a child to leave the school. Its sad that we live in a cultural where any slight is assumed its a white person doing it and every white person is racist. |
In some cultures and families it is. It may have been for these officers. I don't agree with it but in a safety situation like this, I'd consider it. |
The school and parents were very lucky that something bad didn't happen to him while he was on his own and lucky he was found quickly. I think it was lack of supervision as an adult should have followed him. |
| Come on people, the child is 5. Anyone who is, has been or knows a parent should know that a 5 year old is prone to impulsive behavior, SN or not. |
Shhhhh. You're telling on yourself. It's embarrassing. |
| Good lord this thread is depressing. Lots of excuses being made for appalling behavior by police. Unless the attorneys are literally lying about statements made on video by police (in which case they will be sanctioned), there are no valid excuses. |
