Subtle signs of class

Class is very different than wealth! I grew up lower middle class from a wealth standpoint but my parents raised us with class and good manners! The most important things they taught me were to get as much education as possible because nobody can take away your education and give because it is the right thing to do (we gave anonymously). We did not have designer things but we were always to be clean and presentable and that meant our clothing was ironed etc.
The funny thing about this, is that to this day, people have always assumed that I came from a very wealthy family.

This is a very strange comment. You think rich people do not go to Portugal?

Certainly some rich people will go to Portugal. But the most likely traveler to Portugal will be UMC. Reasons for this- 1) Portugal's reputation as a budget destination, and 2) its relative obscurity makes the UMC traveler feel like they've conquered the hinterlands.

No. It is in Western Europe. It is just a cool country. And manageable for a fairly short trip. It is not obscure at all.

That's your view. It's still true that Portugal became a common destination among the UMC when the euro hit a high, and jet fuel prices were surging. So there's a correlation there. I've never known truly wealthy people to vacation there. That doesn't make it a bad destination. As I have said, I am WC, so calm down. Are you middle class? Relax. Try meditation. All the UMCers are doing it, as you know.

Saying that Portugal is not a destination for the rich is not abuse. In fact, from a WC perspective, the class connotations of a destination is immaterial. The only relevant isse is whether you like it. Believing that being correctly pegged as MC or UMC is insultiing is extremely middle class. If you are looking to improve your social standing, stop looking for validation of your choices.

For the Caribbean, the old money goes to Mill Reef, Caneel Bay, Round Hill or do a sailing charter in the BVIs. The nouveau riche go to St Bart’s or Anguilla - or anywhere else to be “seen.” Taking a cruise is the lowest of low classes.

Yachting tends to be for the rich, whereas sailing is UMC.

Beaches for the rich- their own beach house, south of France, Maldives, Cayman (esp for scuba enthusiasts), St Lucia, Tahiti

UMC- Aruba, Florida (esp Amelia Island), Mexico (although that is falling to the MC), Hilton Head Island. The UMC take a dim view of all inclusives and avoid islands where they are prevalent.

Bahamas is MC unless you're staying on a water vessel or at a rented, upscale house.

Domestically, Florida tends to attract more UMC while California tends to attract the rich (esp around Carmel, Pebble Beach, Malibu, etc).
