Kaya Leaving; John Davis in as interim

No on bashes DC teachers? Are you kidding me? Check this entire message board! Who sounds like the kid suggesting that someone might be "jealous" and saying that someone is "not so intelligent?" Charters mean that schools in that state are excellent? I bet some VA parents and teachers would be to differ with you on that one. It is no secret that VA has some school districts that are horrible. Are you saying that places like Richmond are on par academically with high SES Northern VA schools? Take off the rose colored glasses. There is a whole world out there in front of you.

B. Why is it OK to bash DCPS teachers but as soon as VA teachers get pulled in then we put our hands up and say ho-ho now hold up there?
C. They standard in VA are not the same. They really aren't.
D. Jealous? Hardly. I don't even like passing through VA.
E. No charters? So. Charters are also part of the problem.

I think it's been determined that few people can hack the violence, dysfunction and straight out scamming that takes place in DC schools. And the turnover rate--which begins in Sept and continues through the spring--indicates that TONS of teachers from ALL OVER end up leaving. What's telling is that they return to VA, clearly because it's a much better system to work in. I don't disagree that teachers go into DCPS from VA schools. I simply argue that it's not because they are soooooo attracted by the bonus. If that was the case, they'd stick it out and play the game to get the $. Most would rather teach, are used to teaching and prefer that over nonsense.

You do realize that VA & every other state has educational standards, don't you. Frankly they're all the same. They're just not called Common Core. And pls stop trying to put down VA teachers and schools. No one would argue that DC has VA schools beat. You almost sound jealous. Were you unable to get a job in a VA school? Your dislike of VA teachers makes no sense. VA schools surpass those in MD & DC. It has not one charter. Yet no one complains. The public schools are great there.

Just STOP IT! You sound like a kid. A not so intelligent one at that.

1. No one bashes DC teachers. The SYSTEM? YES. Teachers? No. Most posts denounce how teachers are blamed for issues beyond their control.
2. Educational standards are just that. No matter what they're called. Having taught in several states, I can tell you they're the same. In fact, that's what Common Core Standards are--a common set of educational expectations for students. It's not a more rigorous set of standards. Whether you live in Alaska or Alabama, call them "Common Core" or "Our State's Standards", kindergarteners are expected to be able to recite their alphabet and count to 10 by the end of the year (just an example, I have no idea what grade K is expected to learn)
3. No charters and no cry for charters or bemoaning the fact the public schools are too bad to send your kids to==a darned good school system. DC cannot touch VA schools or its teachers. It's apples and oranges so no one even bothers to make the comparison. Your attempt to denigrate VA teachers as somehow being less than or worse is just WEIRD. Did your boyfriend dump you for a VA teacher or something???

Yeah. Only a fool would try to argue DC schools are better than VA.

Too much going on in DC schools. And that sucks. Because the kids suffer.

Yes. What do we know about John Davis? How many years in the classroom? As principal? Where? His stance on school issues?

Not convinced, Bowser's got bigger fish to fry than appointing a new Chancellor anytime soon. Davis could be in there for a long time.

Gotta say, I agree with Mathews on this. DCPS is too much a political minefield to bring in someone new. Hire from within is best.

I've noticed that the only candidates proposed for the position of Superintendent (hopefully) are locals. I have a feeling that many commenters on this thread have not familiarized themselves with the accomplishments of educators outside the local area. At least do some research so that you will be able to provide input. The fact that you have no real voting representation in Congress should embolden you to at least want to have a say in the selection of the next person who is chosen to run DCPS. The residents of the District are shi***d on by everyone.

Bully, hire the best person for the job!!! This is the most ridiculous article ever, there is no one in DCPS currently who is up to the job.

There are plenty of local candidates which relevant experience - way more qualified than Michelle Rhee or Kaya ever were.

Jean Claude Brizard, former CEO of Chicago Public Schools, has been living in DC for 3+ years. There are lots of people with impressive resumes like him who come to work at the federal level, or at think tanks.

Jay says "Low performing districts don't make complete turnarounds in a decade. It has never happened and never will. But if you get some improvement, as DC has, you have something worth continuing, which is unlikely to happen if you hire from outside. ---Jay"

Funny, when Rhee/Kaya said they could turn DC around with their new educational reforms you were all up in their asses, now it turns out that you don't think it can ever happen but we should keep promoting more of the same. Washington Post is less involved now than in the early days when Rhee had all her meetings at the Post but they have no one except this dumbo and Val with her blog posts taking ed. seriously in DC. As half of the kids are now in charters what we need is a radical shift in perspective.
