A child born out of a Jewish mom (or dad, depending on context) is automatically considered to be Jewish.

That's a race, not a religion.

Agreed. And I live in a $1.4 million home close-in VA that looks like a typical mid-size suburban home. I know that half the friends and relatives that come through my door don't think it cost very much---especially when they talk about 'so and so bought a million home (in a place where that would like a Mansion on MTV cribs). Location is pricey.

I don't think I need to be an expert on the matter to understand that a religion isn't typically used as a placeholder for race. But I've also heard that jewish people discriminate a great deal vs anyone not of a particular ethnicity and say they cannot be jews "because of that", so if you take that into account it makes more sense why some people would confuse race and religion.
