how is this bigotry? There's no breakdown by race or sex of the students. Kipp kids appear to be enrolling in and completing college studies at 2 to 5 times the rate of low income kids overall. I think this is a positive development. I doubt that the college completion rate of low income kids will ever match that of wealthier peers as financing college is a major challenge |
I don't understand the comparison to TJ. According to the latest stats, white people are shunning TJ, and the Asian population is increasingly dominant. So based on this thread, most of the whites who responded said that the school was not rigorous enough; the school was no TJ; and, the school reported too low SAT scores. Hmm, if that is truly the reason, why are whites also declining in enrollment at TJ? |
Go find the SAT scores for TJ, compare them to Wilson and to Banneker, and you will see the answer. |
I was just at a comprehensive school where a young man just recieved the Bill Gates Scholarship. He was so nonchalant about the announcement, matter of fact the whole school was like "what's the big deal?" I asked the question what was his SAT scores...they said a 2100. Matter of fact the top 10 at the school all scored about 1900+ but the overall test scores for the school are abysmal. The school will never rank in the Washington Post but they are producing scholars...is that fair. The school population is 99.99% AA and this is the second Bill Gates recipetient in two years. What's their secret formula |
Last year Banneker had TWO Bill Gates Scholarship recipients.

It was interesting that the Jay Matthews article made that claim about Banneker's AP scores, because the "scorecard" on the DCPS website places the percentage of scores 3 or higher for Banneker at 22%. Wilson is at 49% and Walls is 67%. |
this thread is interesting. I'm curious about how a selective DCPS MS EOTR will be received across demographics. Many families IB for non-Deal feeding ES have been clamoring for this for some time. Will the profile be similar to Banneker (strong academic focus but lack of diversity)? Would consider Winston campus in Hillcrest from Ward 6 but other locations might mean tougher commute.
To answer original question -- like many, our children too young to make this decision yet and the historical burden of other families preferences has little bearing. We'd probably rank Walls higher but still consider Banneker even as an "only". Less likely to consider Eastern. But who knows what will happen in the next 7-8 years? |
I think diversity would in part be a function of neighborhood, proximity and transportation options. A centrally located selective admission MS near all major bus routes would probably be very diverse. |

No, that's not the answer to the question. White people are using SAT scores for their reasons to not send their children to Banneker. What is the reason for white people not sending their children to TJ, a largely Asian populated magnet school with great SAT scores? |
The DC School surplus list indicates the magnet school will be located in NE, DC in the old Ron Brown school. That's not EOTR. I don't know the metro stops or bus routes for that area. |
I don't think tha tWhite people are choosing not to send their kids to TJ, rather the Asian Americans are just beating them out for the scarce number of spots available. |
Honest question (and yes, off topic): are white students getting in to TJ and not going, or can't they get through the admissions process? Maybe their parents fear they can't get through the admissions process so they don't try? |
I'm going to put this out there, even though I'm pretty sure I am going to get slammed for saying it: Banneker is a good school, as is Wilson, McKinley Tech, and Walls. But, for those parents who have some choice about where to send their child to school will make their choices based on what they think is important, and what they think will give their particular child the kind of HS experience they hope for them to have. If academics and Ivy's were the only criteria, I'm sure Banneker would be more attractive to those white parents who have already committed to a DC public school.
Here's where I'm probably going to get slammed: Look, it's not a good thing, but it is still a rare thing for white parents to choose to have their child be the minority - and this goes not just for an AA school, but for any scenario that is different from their experience. I'm sure the intent is not racist, but the action can appear so. Not every white parent feels this way, ok? But I think it gets to the root of it a little. It's a little like going to a birthday party where you don't know anyone and they all speak Russian (ok, superficial analogy, but hear me out): some people are comfortable with that scenario, some are not. My white uncle went to Banneker for a time many years ago, until they moved out of the area. There was no issue then, and there should not be now. If parents choose to send their kids elsewhere, it's their choice. You are not going to change their minds by yelling at them. I would suggest those parents who love Banneker celebrate their school, and not worry about the rest of it. |
