I'm going to put this out there, even though I'm pretty sure I am going to get slammed for saying it: Banneker is a good school, as is Wilson, McKinley Tech, and Walls. But, for those parents who have some choice about where to send their child to school will make their choices based on what they think is important, and what they think will give their particular child the kind of HS experience they hope for them to have. If academics and Ivy's were the only criteria, I'm sure Banneker would be more attractive to those white parents who have already committed to a DC public school. Here's where I'm probably going to get slammed: Look, it's not a good thing, but it is still a rare thing for white parents to choose to have their child be the minority - and this goes not just for an AA school, but for any scenario that is different from their experience. I'm sure the intent is not racist, but the action can appear so. Not every white parent feels this way, ok? But I think it gets to the root of it a little. It's a little like going to a birthday party where you don't know anyone and they all speak Russian (ok, superficial analogy, but hear me out): some people are comfortable with that scenario, some are not. My white uncle went to Banneker for a time many years ago, until they moved out of the area. There was no issue then, and there should not be now. If parents choose to send their kids elsewhere, it's their choice. You are not going to change their minds by yelling at them. I would suggest those parents who love Banneker celebrate their school, and not worry about the rest of it.
