This was exactly the reason that I chose Fairfield. I did not want some catty Greek life system. |
I checked it out yesterday when I was updating the USNWR rankings and it looks like a great university. Very committed to Jesuit principles around service to others, diversity, and promoting justice. Beautiful campus. |
| Thank goodness the MAGA poster keeps getting booted. |
I went to a Jesuit college for undergrad. I went there because it was the best college I got into that didn’t require a foreign language (in other words, religion had zero influence on my choice). It’s hard to describe the atmosphere at this college. It’s paradoxical in that there is a religious tone in the background, but it’s definitely in the BACKGROUND. Students used drugs & had sex. They drank beer & skipped class. Not everyone was Catholic, or even Christian. The religious background gave the institution a sort of overall direction, but there was nothing stifling about it. There were professors from all races & religions, & not one of them “forced” their views on students. |
Another Jesuit grad here. Not sure why that poster even cares, but a certain group of Catholics have always had a bee in their bonnet about Jesuits. The Opus Dei types can find another Catholic school to attend, or maybe start a new one for themselves. |
| Not many great academic schools beyond Georgetown, Boston College, and Holy Cross. Have to wonder how some lesser ranked Catholic schools will survive with small endowments and offer deep discounts off tuition to attract good students. |
So this is a real thing. If you are a college you have to have something special about you that makes people want to go. You cannot be 1 of 200 and expect to survive. Georgetown is top 25. BC is in the next 10 and should be top 25 as well. HC has been an elite Catholic choice forever. What do the others have? Some could have location but if they do not have a niche they will be gone. |
Well they are run by the “black pope” ! My dad went to Jesuit school from childhood through grad school and the Jesuits definitely are the bad @sses of the Catholics. Pope Francis was the very first Jesuit pope in the history of the church. That’s how long it took and shows you what the other orders think of them, rebels! And Francis was the most liberal and inclusive—though Leo seems to be following in his manner. Jesuits have unique charisma, educational focus and commitment to social justice and missionary work. The Jesuit priests I have come across have all been so witty and intelligent. That sharp wit is found in many people raised in Jesuit education. |
And ROI is not a concept that should be used for college. Just a dumb metric for what you are getting. And for many the 90k a year is a rounding error or has already been saved for. |
That is not likely. Pat Reilly or Phil Jackson could not help them and I am an alum. |
You haven’t posted this enough times in this thread. 10 or 15 more times should do it. |
| Fordham and Villanova have really fallen in US News. Nova needs top 10 hoops program but Jay Wright isn’t on the bench anymore. |
Nova hasn’t really fallen yet though. 10 years ago they were in the regional uni category then got a big boost in apps from the championships but still around their high. But yeah acceptance rate keeps going up as the team struggles |
Being raised in NoVA. I can’t separate the region’s nickname from the college . When I went to VT in the early 90s and people were referring to DC area as Nova- I was so confused. Nova was only used for the community college my entire youth. Same with DMV!! It was only the department of motor vehicles until it started meaning location.
lol |
| Can’t see spending $100k a year for Villanova. |
