Einstein doesn't even care about the humanities. It's not about interest. It's about resource allocation, and the principal chooses how to allocate his staff and course offerings. There is plenty of interest, and students and parents are told no. |
I totally agree with you. I will add that the talented theater and dance kids at Einstien are also doing outside theater programs, voice lessons, and dance lessons, just like at other high schools. The idea that Einstein (or any mcps HS) is "preparing" these kids for some sort of future in the performing arts is just not true. These programs could be located anywhere. I wonder how many Einstein parents actually know what "Academy" their child is enrolled in. Just because a large number of Einstein students are part of VAPA doesn't mean the majority of parents care about it. |
I honestly think they could swap the medical programs and put them at Whitman and put the Humanities program at Einstein and give back the performing arts to Northwood and everyone would feel a little more satisfied. |
DP - no, thank you. I’m glad Einstein will have medical sciences. Whitman doesn’t need anything special beyond being Whitman and I mean that sincerely. |
That’s fine, and you can have your opinion, but they are putting a program in every school so unless you think 24 schools should get a program and Whitman should be excluded because reasons, they’re going to get something. Honestly it doesn’t sound like Einstein people will be satisfied no matter what is offered to them. |
I'm an Einstein parent, and I am beginning to think this way as well. |
I how you ignore the actual reasons detailed above as to why Whitman shouldn't get a program. It truly makes no sense. I suspect there are other schools that don't need programs either, but I am speaking to Region 1. |
Do you have a child in 7th grade or below? |
I don’t think anyone care about the academy. I don’t know if my kids are signed up as we get no information about it. I don’t really know what an academy is or does. I want my kids to be well rounded with arts, sports and academics as most do. |
I agree with you. The Einstein parents (and in bounds property owners) I know who care about this process (I'm not saying majority of all parents, because, I don't think the majority of Einstein parents care about any of this), want to see some sort of "desirable" magnet at Einstein that will help sustain higher level academic offerings. Most of us could care less about IB (unless they make it the IB magnet) and performing arts magnets. |
We want the same opportunities that your kids get at Whitman at our home schools. If you get arts and academics, shouldn’t our kids as well. I think you don’t understand the huge disparities at each school. The medical program is very basic. |
|
And the reason Whitman doesn't need a program is because they already have:
- their own engineering program - Numerous advanced science classes including 3 different AP physics classes - advanced math up to MVC (no I am not the MVC poster but just cataloguing what Whitman has, and one of those things is MVC) - 9 AP social studies classes So no, they won't be sending their kids to Einstein for biomedical science, gmafb. The kids will be traveling one way in this model. |
No one will be leaving or going to Whitman. The grouping made no sense. Give Whitman their own region. |
Whitman goes further than MVC. Einstein has two basic engineering classes both taught at the same time by the same teacher. 3 ap social studies, maybe 4 but I did not look closely. History teachers at Einstein are very strong. No ap science, some IB but they are a double class which makes it hard till senior year. Two ap computer science classes but that’s it. Would Whitman families be ok with that? |
Whitman also offers the most foreign languages out of all MCPS highschools despite its size. They offer ASL, French, Latin, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. |
