Don't sign. More delays is a waste. You just want to hoard programs. The county is larger than DCC.


The DCC was created because the schools lacked the classes and opportunities that the W schools have. With the regional plan, the W schools continue to have the better classes and resources and the DCC and other schools will continue to go without to make them strong schools.


Again, the county is more than the DCC and the W’s.


There are regions throughout the county under this proposal. The goal is to give more kids access to programs and strengthen home schools.

With the regional plan formerly DCC schools will host programs and have access to programs at other schools just like they do now.


And slowing down or stopping the regional model means that other areas without programs or school choice continue to not have programs or school choice.


School choice is not effective for improving student outcomes.


Agree but it’s apparently what the people want, since they think that having these regional programs will provide their kids more options. And the DCC seems to have a death grip on school choice.


You're trying to monolithesize parents to argue in favor of the regional program proposal.

I don't support school choice. I think the DCC has some benefits for many students from all backgrounds but overall it does not improve outcomes. I think taking that away and sending hundreds of high achieving kids to Whitman and BCC is a horrible idea. Here is what I think MCPS should do:
- A full audit of courses (not programs, that is a lazy way to look at school assets) available at each school
- In schools where certain types of courses are not available (e.g. AP physics or MVC), have one of the schools (a school that doesn't already have it) offer it and provide transportation from students' neighborhoods for those courses. This program should be limited to schools that do not already have these courses in place. Schools that already offer advanced coursework in multiple areas, like Whitman, should not be part of any regions)

What other parents think MCPS should do has no bearing on what I think they should do. I am an individual with my own opinions.

That response wasn’t saying you should stop arguing for whatever you want, which was weirdly how you read it. I was saying that for a long time people have pursued school choice in various forms here in MCPS, resulting in this regional model proposal. What you and I may want apparently flies counter to what many others want.


MCPS hasn't done much to ask parents what they want. They don't even advertise their survey on their website. What makes you think you know what parents want?

Even if they do ask most parents won't respond. Nobody knows what "most" MCPS parents want. I suspect that "most" MCPS parents do not care.


Okay so do we know what most parents want? No. It stands to reason, then, that ideas shared by individual posters in DCUM cannot be dismissed on the basis that they are "contrary to what most parents want". Anyone who says that is just trying to dismiss ideas that they themselves do not like.


I personally do not like the consortia, magnets, or regions. However, other people also strongly fight for those things.


I don't like them either. But I think if we have them, they should be accessible to all in the county. The regional model appears to do that.

We are hearing a lot of opposition from people who are in the DCC. I think they should remember that the county is larger than the DCC and W schools and that MCPS has a duty to provide for all students.


Well yeah the DCC is going to be most impacted by this, but many of the concerns go beyond not wanting to lose the DCC. If you want to ignore those points just because you think DCC parents are self-involved for speaking out, that's a you problem.

The NEC doesn't have the same amount of choice or of programs as the DCC

Putting magnet programs in schools that already have tons of wealthy and high achieving students and advanced coursework in math, science, and engineering that other schools do not have is also unfair. But you don't care about rich schools having more stuff than the DCC. You are only here to try to dismiss and discredit the real concerns that DCC parents have about this rushed and haphazard program proposal that Thomas seems determined to ram through.


I agree the program is rushed and haphazard and at the end of the day, many kids will be negatively affected and few positively affected. But it’s tiresome that “DCC parents” think they are the only victims and everything is unfair for them and fair for everyone else.

I'm sorry you don't like that DCC parents are pointing out that in Region 1, Whitman and BCC already have so much and are getting more, while Einstein, Northwood and Blair are only losing things. We're not going to shut up because you don't like us for whatever reason, which I don't think you're being honest about.


It is obvious to everyone that you are going to repeat the same thing over and over again and only see the situation as glass half empty for yourself. The lady who referenced main character syndrome was not so off base.


They are repeating it because the lack of course offerings is a serious issue and Northwood to Whitman or even BCC is not easy for all families, assuming your child gets in and assuming you want your kids at those schools. For high school, its not just back and forth twice, but it can be up to 4 times a day with sports and activities.

No, because the offerings at those schools are not good and they have few advanced classes.
