OP you don't need to keep putting up with people here being jackasses. College Confidential is actually filled with people willing to help, and with moderators that help keep people in line; you should go check it out if you're tired of people being weird here. |

Thank you! I definitely did research myself but we didn't feel the need to hire a professional college counselor - We thought it was a waste of money, and I'm now I'm really hoping that we made the right choice in regards to that. I forgot to mention a few things in the OP by accident (such as her being a National Merit Finalist, I guess that would fall under ECs/awards?). DD is pre-med (wants to go to med school but not entirely sure which pathway) and has always had a passion for engineering. DD really likes the double major option in CMU for BME that would allow her to also study more traditional forms of engineering. |
Unless the kid was hooked in some way that you were not aware of this did not happen. |
Idk, maybe it's just my perception then, but I remember previous years for family friends' kids seeming a lot less stressful. But then again, I guess it's all just a draw of luck with T20 schools. |
This is all that my daughter told me. Idk the student or any hooks they might have had. |
1240 doesn’t get anyone into a top LAC. |
It sounds like you/she were not realistic. These schools have only so many slots and there are many many kids similar to her. |
Lmao god you guys are so self-absorbed, OP is allowed to let out their (rightful) frustrations without being attacked left and right. If a perfect GPA, 1570 SAT, and 5s in 14 APs is "average" to you (yes, even in a more competitive area) then you need to get your head examined. I feel bad for some of your kids, this place can be such a toxic cesspool. |
There are tons and tons of kids with these stat's and that's the problem. She got into great schools but she didn't stand out for the other ones. Her EC's are volunteering only. 200 hospital hours is good but many kids have 200 volunteer hours on top of other EC's. |
Understood but only 2% of SAT scores were under 1400 and they were almost guaranteed to be hooked. |
Yeah, then he was most likely hooked. DD told me in a moment of frustration and didn't mention anything else. |
Frustration, yes. Disappointment, sure. Feelings are feelings. But rightful? No one has a right to be disappointed or is entitled to be disappointed because they didn’t get into a particular school. Especially schools with extremely low admit rates. No doubt OP’s DD worked hard but so did a lot of other kids. Working hard and doing well does not guarantee anything. It doesn’t give anyone the right to anything. |
Of course it doesn't, but some of you like PP acting like these are "average" stats (even for NoVa) are insane. |
Brown was test optional this year. Many kids with 1300 could have gotten in. That is what test optional does. OP should have applied next year when TO goes away for Brown if wanted the 1500 to matter. This year it wouldn’t have been the bump to get in. |
