Why is Northeastern (NEU) so popular with both parents and students these days?

Simply not true. It has been a local/regional school until very recently when they made it so easy to apply by just a few extra clicks on the common app. No essays or additional materials like most colleges require for an application.

It hasn't been a regional school for over 25 years. You are revealing your age when you write like that!!

+1. BU was always more of a commuter school than Northeastern - maybe that is what is bothering this poster?

My neighbor's child went to BU. Great kid, loved his time there. He lived off campus after his sophomore year. Met other students from all over the world. He's doing well now, working at P&G. All these Boston schools have become top notched- BU, NEU, BC, Tufts, Babson. If you can afford them, the experience can't be beat.

+1

The Boston area colleges scene is special. Even Emerson gets some love.

My BU child knew nothing about hockey, but the hockey tournament known as the Beanpot really drew him in. His friends attended all the games with the other big 3 schools Harvard, BC, and Northeastern. It was really quite the experience.

I doubt that schools like bc and BU care about playing Northeastern. Sounds like NEU boosters trying to manufacture a rivalry.

Do you even know what you’re talking about? Northeastern won last years beanpot along with 2020, 2019, 2018.

The Beanpot has been BU, BC, Harvard and Northeastern. BC and BU were always dominant but Northeastern is dominating lately. Just like the school I guess.

Does Northeastern Mills College have a hockey team?

Just Boston. Forgot to add Northeastern swept the 2024 Beanpots, both men and women.

5 Beanpot wins in the last 7 years. BC and BU better care about playing Northeastern because they are both on a losing streak. It’s Harvard that no one worries too much about.

Time to shut down the thread.

It’s baffling the speed they find these threads. My kid’s school often gets bashed on here but I just let it slide since everyone is entitled to their opinion. Apparently no one is allowed to not like NEU since it’s the best school ever.

LOL -agree! When I wss in college, it was a school for white trash "townies".

I lived in Boston for 10 years and had never heard of northeastern. Not once.

Where in Boston? Because if you were in Boston proper for ten years you would have at least seen the name. It’s on the green line of the T and the stop is called Northeastern.

Plus there was probably no reason for you to know the many colleges in Boston.

Cambridge

So you didn’t live in Boston. I lived in Cambridge for a few years and I never said I lived in Boston. They are two very distinct cities.

Small minded buffoon.

Nobody outside northeastern students/parents/employees is thinking about northeastern. It is completely forgettable.
Anonymous
I totally don't get it. My kids weren't interested and I have absolutely no clue why it is so popular.

Curious why it gets almost 100k applications? And if it is true that there are only 3,000 freshmen, they must be doing something right.

They made it so easy to apply by just a few extra clicks on the common app. No essays or additional materials like most colleges require for an application.

The number of applications are due to 1) ridiculously easy application, 2) the location in Boston, and 3) the school is considered not a hard admit so accessible to the average kid.

It is really that simple. The number of applications is not a meaningful metric.

Popular because it is the chuck e cheese of colleges. Being popular has nothing to do with quality. It just means they appeal to the unwashed masses.

I cannot imagine why anyone has the need to espouse so much hatred for a school they claim holds no interest and no value to them. Nealry 100,000 kids are clamoring for only 3,000 Boston spots, so there are tens of thousands who feel differently than you. In the words of Elsa, "Let. It. Go."

Isn't it same for almost all the schools???

Like some said here, I never heard of Northeastern or Tufts or many many other schools before. Didn't know difference between Boston College and Boston University. You get to know the schools when doing college research. Northeastern is popular for below reasons in general, but it's not for everyone just like any other school. It's not one or two reasons that make a school popular just like many other schools. Just a common sense.

- Great urban location, there are ton of kids who prefer good urban location. Boson is also one of the most popular destinations.
- Relatively cohesive nice modern looking campus for an urban location
Our family of 5 visited the four peer schools - Tufts, Boston College, Boston Univ, and Northeastern Univ, and Northeastern was top choice for all of us for the location + campus combination.
- Satisfaction based on retention rate. It's like top 5 among national universities.
- Good balance. The school pay much attention to CS, Engineering, Science and other STEM areas, but also very strong in Business, Art & Design, pre-med, and other areas. It's well rounded unlike other Engineering heavy schools
- Outcomes. Flexible Coop program contributes to this, but ultimately produce great outcomes.
- Quality of student body - smart, intelligent, independent, motivated, top notch, most of them have stats for T25 schools.
- Sports and Greek life is relatively weak, but it has very good D1 hockey team as mentioned above and have little bit of everything for everyone.
- etc.

However again it's not for everyone, so if it's not for you, simply pass.

Too long thread. Didn’t read it. But surely someone noted this: marketing. Read ‘Who gets in and Why’ - details NEU wish in late 90s to crack T100. Clearly reached goal - and more.
