Why is Northeastern (NEU) so popular with both parents and students these days?

Boston, USNWR, co-op and possibility of merit (not sure if that's the case anymore).

This plus the fact there are no supplemental essays. It is no work to throw in an app.

How many students do you personally know where they applied?

Marketing. No essays. It’s actually not that selective if you apply ED.

It is for EA.

Our child accepted ED to NEU, Boston campus. Living their best life and enjoys classes, friends, and of course the city of Boston. They are looking forward to co-ops, and trying new things.

There is a college foe every student. If your child likes NEU, go for it (our child has friends who were accepted to Oakland, Rome and Greece). And if not, don't apply. No need to bash someone else's choice

NEU set out very intentionally to move up the rankings by understanding the factors that go into the algorithm and strategically investing to move up the ranks. Once it started moving up, the buzz improved and more applied and so on. I have no opinion either way on the school (neither of my kids applied). But I do think coops are a valuable feature and it's benefited from the trend of students increasingly preferring urban schools.

here's an article from 10 years ago about the turnaround: https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2014/08/26/how-northeastern-gamed-the-college-rankings/

I am an alum of NEU. I don’t understand the popularity either. My kid visited many colleges in Boston and loved NEU most.

Yup this exactly -- it misleadingly decreases that acceptance rate, making it seem like a prestigious school, which it is not.

My kid visited in 2018 and was unimpressed. Part of it was that it was an urban campus, which he found he didn't like. The other turnoff was the students who were pushing the concept of co-op. It seemed like this was the only facet of the school they could hang their hat on. No depth to the culture of the institution. He ended up at Notre Dame which was the other extreme, so that makes total sense!

One reason that they get so many applications is that it’s a very easy to apply to school with a simple check mark on the common app. Most better schools require additional essays.

Your kid didn't get in, eh?

Hey! The NEU Booster is back!
Time to shut down the thread.

It's not popular. It's just easier to apply because of the lack of supplemental essay requirements.

...which makes it popular.
