I was not kidding! Super proud of DS and I have been rooting for him in this whole process. He is a super kid. |

Um, too late. |
He only has applications in for schools he is still actively considering so he does not disadvantage other applicants. Um, too late. How is it too late? RD has not come out yet at most schools. If her son already withdrew, those colleges will have plenty of spots open to fill. One person's kid isn't taking away a spot from your kid. |
Three questions: How did your son possibly have the time to put in so many acceptances? And wasn't it outrageously expensive to apply to so many schools? And perhaps most importantly, how will your son choose among ~20-30 acceptances? He can't visit them all! In any case, congratulations on this unusual achievement! You should be proud--even if it's not something I'd want for my family (or would want many other kids doing, given the effects it could have on other applicants), I recognize the accomplishment. |

You must have a lot of money to burn. That’s several thousand in application fees. |
So, he did all of his applications in August. He qualified for a fee waiver at the time because both my husband and I had lost our jobs at the time and he was our family's only source of income for 3 months while we tried to secure new jobs. My husband ended up switching fields but that is a whole other thing... We have some savings but we were scraping by. He spent the whole month working on essays and many of the schools did not require additional essays because they are beneath DCUM standards but would still provide an affordable education. So he only wrote about 15-20 unique essays in total and managed to rework them for other schools once he got to a certain point. Now that he has the full ride, cost is no longer a factor. He is planning to pick his top 3 in April and we will use some of the money we set aside for him to visit them. But thank you for your kind words, it is definitely a unique accomplishment! We could not believe his luck so far and are confident he will pick the school that is right for him. |
I'm curious about the 3rd party full ride? Without outing him, can you tell more about it? |
I can't say much about the 3rd party full ride without outing him since it has very specific conditions. But it is through his public school and we are in a more rural area. It is specific to his school. |

| Isn’t there a limit on how many places you can apply to with the Common App? Some people seem to have applied to a lot more through the Common Black College Application. |
SUNY application, UC application, straight to the institution (Wisconsin, Rutgers, UIUC) are also options. |

Our college counseling office showed interesting (internal) data that shows that the number of elite acceptances does not go up if a kid applies to 3 reaches vs 3 times as many.
However, they have found that it gets demoralizing for a kid to have a dozen rejections vs 3 and can negatively color the entire process even if the kid gets into a match school in the end. Basically--applying to 20+ schools can often just increase the stress and not change the outcome. |
Depends on how tailored the apps were; how much help the applicant had; and if last minute or not - when it’s hard to adequately research and respond. I’ve seen it backfire as you state, but also have seen a 50% success rate (10+ reaches) of a very well planned out, researched, and well-executed one-of-a-kind application response. Very hard to do in 2 weeks though. Usually need months of planning to visit, sit in on classes, email professors, research deeply and execute accordingly |
