Senior parents - how many applications this cycle?

YOLO. REA Acceptance would have done it. But that was not to be.

Typical numbers this year. DC private kids who didn't hit ED/REA: 20 applications.

13 for high-stats DC

-1 safety EA (admitted in November)
-8 reaches, including an ED/SCEA app (which was denied in December)
-4 targets

DC is okay with the safety, which allowed DC to be more aggressive in pursuing reaches. Predictably, DC added a 2-3 schools in RD after the ED denial. Personally, I wish DC had submitted an ED2 app, but DC was steadfastly against it.

1 REA - Deferred
5 EA (Publics) - Accepted at all
3 UCs - Waiting
15 RD (7 IVY + 3 SLAC)
Because your kid loves the core at Columbia but also the open curriculum at Brown? The rural isolation of Dartmouth and the vibe of Cambridge? The intellectualism of Yale and the preprofessional focus at Penn? SMH

It’s not crazy at all. Those of us who need merit apply to many schools. Families who don’t need merit, don’t have to apply to as many.

12 - thrilled with a top EA admit and withdrew all

LOL. I am SMH too. If there were a reasonable chance of getting in where one really wanted to go, none of this would be an issue. But this is not the world we live in. Say you loved the open curriculum and did not get in Brown. What next? Drop all Ivies and go to Wesleyan? Maybe for some kids, but not my DC (sadly).

0 ED - lot of tears; didn't want to commit too early
3 EA - 2 publics and 1 SLAC (accepted at all)
9 RD - 7 yes so far (3 regional publics, 2 random privates, 1 reach private, 1 SLAC)

The differences between schools are all overblown. They are more similar than they are different in the end. So, yes, apply everywhere folks.

One got in ED and pulled everything right away.
