DS did 75 total. 25 safety, 31 target, 19 reach. He was the one who wanted to do that many and has had amazing results so far. Only 2 rejections, 1 deferral, and 1 withdrawn so far. Accepted to 52 and waiting to hear back from 19
Genuinely curious why he wanted to apply to so many? There is a girl on CC who applied to 60 with a clear favorite, but decided to apply to the other 59 for who knows what reason? She routinely pops up on posts, sweating out acceptances, subsequently bragging about scholarships, only to have had her eye on one school all along. There simply can't be a genuine interest in that many schools, and these numbers go well beyond having options or a safety. Whatever the intention is, this type of behavior has a negative impact on other applicants.
We are a donut hole family and he was insistent on trying to secure a full-ride scholarship. He applied to schools of all tiers to do so. He has actually withdrawn ~40 applications because he managed to secure a full ride from a third-party!!! We are super proud of him! He also enjoyed receiving the acceptance goodies like stickers and T-shirts. He only has applications in for schools he is still actively considering so he does not disadvantage other applicants.
Three questions: How did your son possibly have the time to put in so many acceptances? And wasn't it outrageously expensive to apply to so many schools? And perhaps most importantly, how will your son choose among ~20-30 acceptances? He can't visit them all! In any case, congratulations on this unusual achievement! You should be proud--even if it's not something I'd want for my family (or would want many other kids doing, given the effects it could have on other applicants), I recognize the accomplishment.
So, he did all of his applications in August. He qualified for a fee waiver at the time because both my husband and I had lost our jobs at the time and he was our family's only source of income for 3 months while we tried to secure new jobs. My husband ended up switching fields but that is a whole other thing... We have some savings but we were scraping by. He spent the whole month working on essays and many of the schools did not require additional essays because they are beneath DCUM standards but would still provide an affordable education. So he only wrote about 15-20 unique essays in total and managed to rework them for other schools once he got to a certain point. Now that he has the full ride, cost is no longer a factor. He is planning to pick his top 3 in April and we will use some of the money we set aside for him to visit them. But thank you for your kind words, it is definitely a unique accomplishment! We could not believe his luck so far and are confident he will pick the school that is right for him.
