Where do the people in the $6/7/8m+ mansions in send their kids?

My kids are also at Norwood and we live in one of those houses.

It’s not what this thread is talking about - houses that cost $5M+ in Bethesda/Potomac/CC are small estates with 10,000+ sqft and a guest house. I have a friend who lives in that kind of house and she has multiple staff.

My kids think those houses are big. While there are some kids at Norwood in those houses (probably at most of the schools in the area) it’s not typical.

lol ok. Your kids need more perspective. You live in a mansion.

We live in a 3,000 sq ft townhouse. Your kids probably would think we live in a shack. Ironically, our HHI is north of $1 million. We just don’t feel the need to have a ridiculous house.

Weird of you to flex a tiny house. Some of us have bigger needs.

No one needs a 5,000+ sq ft house.

It’s wasteful.

Some of us absolutely do. How clueless you are.

Explain to me why you have to have a 5,000 sq ft house.

Some of us regularly have to entertain large parties as part of our jobs.

Some of us have frequent house guests or multi-generation households.

Some of us have larger houses to more easily avoid family members.

Yeah, most of the families I know who have houses that big don’t fit into the top 2 categories. And the third one is just sad.

We all want to avoid family members sometimes. Like when your kids have friends over, or when you have work that needs to get done, or when relatives are visiting.

Sad that non-tiny houses bother people.

It’s so wasteful. Also, no one needs a 5,000+ sq ft house to have space from family members.

Lastly: 3,000 sq ft isn’t tiny. If you think it is, you’re delusional.

If you think that is wasteful, you have no idea what else goes on.

I know it very well. I grew up in a house like that. It’s gross.

Are you aware that some of us have many houses?

Of course. Me telling you that having a 6,000 sq ft house is wasteful doesn’t mean I don’t realize you all do even more ridiculous things.

Sorry but 6,000 sq ft is a JOKE!

How does it feel to measure your self worth by the size of your house?

You are the only one doing that. We could care less.

Oh no — you all are telling me all the reasons you simply HAVE to have ridiculous houses.

Although why someone would spend millions on something they couldn’t care less about I have no idea.

We have numerous.

If you have the money and it's your thing, why not.

I'm wealthy, like 20 million. If I had an extra zero in my net worth I would do a time share on a G-5 Jet, why not. But I don't have that kind of net worth, so no private jet. I do have a big house, private schools and multiple European Vacations every year.

Big house that you’ll buy lots of crap for, which will eventually go into a landfill? Sure.

It’s all about what you want.

Believe in Capitalism and market based incentives. If you get wealthy within the laws of the US, god bless you. Spend the money on whatever gives you pleasure within the law.

If you don't like that, change the laws or work hard to get wealthy as well.

St John's does.

This is not something new in the world of high school sports. Some schools do it, some don't - some do it just for certain sports. Sidwell does it for tennis and basketball. Other schools do it for lacrosse, or whatever.... It's life. If you don't like it, choose a school that doesn't have sports teams or one that doesn't recruit for sports.

I meant other schools of the same academic caliber.

That’s my point. It’s as if schools are only allowed to be superior in one area—academics OR sports. The prevailing sentiment seems to be, “ how dare Sidwell excel in both areas!”

Obviously, that’s Sidwell’s choice. I never said or thought “how dare they”. That said, I do find it surprising and a bit pathetic.

Pathetic because Sidwell is dominating DMV schools in academics, basketball, and tennis?!? Pathetic indeed! 😂

Academics? Ah, no. Tennis? Maybe girls but not all around. Hoops? Didn’t Visi beat you last year?

Sidwell dominating other DMV private schools? Check (based on college matriculations and percentage of NMSFs).

Sidwell dominating other DMV schools in girls tennis? Check (ISL champions for FOUR straight years, and ranked #2 in the nation).

Sidwell dominating other DMV schools in basketball? Check
Boys:
1. BACK TO BACK (2022 and 2023) DCSAA Champions, and their third championship title in the past four seasons; and
2. National titles, including the State Champions Invitational; and
3. At least TWO current NBA players.

Girls:
1. BACK TO BACK (2022 and 2023) DCSAA Champions;
2. National titles, including the State Champions Invitational; and
3. Recent players who have won:
Gatorade National Player of the Year (2022),
McDonald’s All-American Player, including MVP (2022 and 2023).

Sidwell vs. Visi? Please be serious.

Visitation beat Sidwell in the game that mattered.

Sidwell does not have the best matriculations.

The two NBA players actually lost while at Sidwell to pretty mediocre STA teams.
STA, not Gonzaga or Dematha.

1. That game only mattered to Visi (Go Visi…I guess). Visi won one game against Sidwell that season. Sidwell won the state CHAMPIONSHIP later that season.

2. Sidwell’s college matriculations are consistently among the best in the city. Argue with someone who doesn’t know any better.

3. So, those STA basketball alums currently play for which NBA teams? I’ll wait…

Sidwell lost, to Visi and to STA. Sad for the Sidwell powerhouse that with future pros and top college recruits they could not beat teams with a bunch of D-3 players at best. Sounds like the kids who advanced did so in spite of Sidwell not because of it.

Why would the Sadwell booster bring up the nba basketball player that failed out and was helped back in and given a Sadwell degree ?

Whew—those grapes must be sour because you sound super bitter! 😝

Based on DCUM comments, I don’t think there’s a school in the DMV that has more committed and vocal critics than Sidwell.

All of this vitriol reminds me of the following quote:
“If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.”
Sidwell continues to succeed anyway.

Probably because no other Big 3/5 schools can boast about having ANY current NBA players. I’m sure Sidwell will consider your “concerns” when they’re adding those NBA players’ donations to their coffers. Sidwell will be forced to wipe their tears with stacks of bills. 😭💰
