NPR has confirmed that he has died. Grant Wahl was the journalist who wore the rainbow soccer ball shirt into one of the early games a few weeks ago.

It seems he did mention he thought he might have bronchitis in his last podcast. But being kicked out of a game in Qatar for wearing a rainbow t shirt as a journalist will undoubtedly cause speculation.

DP. There is no mistake, Grant Wahl is confirmed dead. The only question is whether someone made it happen. Wahl was getting death threats over his pride shirt and his critical coverage of Qatar’s human rights abuses.

It was such a perfect day of soccer. My family spent as much time together today as we did in the early days of the pandemic, and it was so lovely. Grant would have written an amazing piece about it. I hate this.

He definitely had something going on, there is no dispute about that. The State Department has announced they are working to repatriate his remains expeditiously. If Qatar makes his remains immediately available intact so they can be autopsied, I will give them benefit of the doubt on the rest of it. If they play games, that will look very suspicious.
