Starr on Kojo's Show on Math Acceleration

Anonymous
He said that math acceleration has not been eliminated and will be provided to those who need it. My question is, how does MCPS determine who needs it? It certainly is not being provided in my kid's 3rd grade class. Everyone does the same thing.

He is now claming that if kids need to be accelerated in math, they will be accelerated. There is NOTHING happening right now under 2.0 that suggests that is true. Last week our principal specifically told a school wide meeting that there is currently NO mechanism to accelerate anyone.

He said that math acceleration has not been eliminated and will be provided to those who need it. My question is, how does MCPS determine who needs it? It certainly is not being provided in my kid's 3rd grade class. Everyone does the same thing.

1 How does MCPS determine who needs acceleration? Who does this? Who makes the (final) determination? What is used to make the determination? What are the components of the determination? How is the determination arrived at? When is the determination made or arrived at? Where is the determination made (in the classroom, in the Principals office, downtown with AEI) ? In reference to the school year, what is the timeline required to reach this determination? How often during the school year is this determination made? What is necessary or required to trigger the determination process? Is there a transparent standard operating procedure (SOP) for triggering and executing this determination? Is this transparent SOP (and timeline) available at the MCPS leadership, school, principal, teacher, parent and student level? Is it necessary to keep this process shrouded in secrecy? What can MCPS, the school, the principal and the teacher do to disrobe secrecy from the process?

Email Starr, Erick Lang, Marty Creel, the BOE, and anyone else you can think of, with your question.

What recourse do we, as parents, have here?

2.0 has been rolled out in my DC's school this year and, so far, that roll out has been filled with inept and incomplete communication from MCPS and from our school.

Either MCPS is deliberately misleading parents about this new curriculum (something that appears more likely to me) or it is woefully unprepared to adequately describe this sweeping change in the structure and content of our children's school experience.

For example: if Sup. Starr is telling the truth that math acceleration is still possible under 2.0, principals (and Starr) ought to be able to tell parents how that will work. So far, I haven't heard anything close to a clear, concise explanation of that process. This leads me to believe that either 1) they are lying and, in fact, acceleration is not possible or 2) they are inept and haven't figured out what that acceleration process will look like.

Which is it: lying or ineptitude? Our kids aren't well served with either.

Either pathway or option doesn't seem enlightening.

After a double raise for employees of MCPS perhaps the Superintendent will do something for the children (customer and client). Pathways for advancement and acceleration are dirt cheap (and return on investment significantly greater) in comparison to MCPS self rewards.

Go to the polling booth and vote out the incumbents you don't like. The customers and clients need to communicate directly with the Super instead of hiding behind the mask of anonymity. Show some backbone--that is if you really care.

I agree with the Pp, but would add that voting, too, is anonymous. We need to have a county-wide strike --where parents keep kids home to protest, or we picket in front of the schools. Something dramatic needs to happen in order to focus attention onto this mess. So far, MCPS hides behind misinformation, disinformation and a classic bureaucratic divide-and-conquer.
If parents marched and organized, do you really think the national news outlets could ignore the story?! I bet that would facilitate some answers, change and responsiveness from Starr and MCPS.

Presumptious, aren't you.

What makes you think the poster (s) will not vote in the election? Do you want to squeeze into the poll booth with them in the nane of anonymity?

Obviously, this poster isn't too bright. Must be one of the dull undecided voters with no clue about the process of voting!

The poster is in dire need of a pathway for mental deceleration and retardation.

Typical of Montgomery County residents in short supply of reasoned responses. Oy! there are incumbents up for reelection--vote them out if you want and stop whining.

Whining on this forum gets you nowhere. Voting and protesting to the proper administrators may get you somewhere. We are in this situation because of people sitting around and whining and doing nothing.

Just might be that no one in your kids class deserves acceleration. By the way differentiation and acceleration are not the same.

There are kids who need acceleration in that class. That is why I mentioned it. Thanks for pointing out that differntiation and acceleration are not the same. I don't know what I would do without you.
