Boy Scouts during school hours?

Anonymous
My 3rd grader told me that the boys missed recess today to attend a Boy Scouts presentation. This is a new school (centeral VA area) and first public school. Is anyone else surprised that this would happen during the school day, parents weren't asked, & kids weren't given an option? I do not feel the Boy Scouts should be supported in a public school setting during the school day.

I agree with you, and I would be doubly pissed that it was in lieu of recess.

This would make me angry. It was a boneheaded move, especially considering BSA's less than inclusive policies.

The more anti-liberal programs in this area, the better, I say. There's be no problem if the assembly were for the Religion of Peace, for instance.

If this occurred in central VA, or western MD, it would not surprise me at all. If it took place in MoCo or Arlington, I'd be shocked.

Wow, I would be beyond pissed and have a word with the principal.

yeah, I don't think this is appropriate. Girl Scout and Boy Scout recruitment events are not allowed during school hours at our NoVA school. However, we are allowed to meet after hours. Apparently, in NC, neither group is allowed access to public school facilities. To be honest, I think NC may be doing the right thing, even though I am a Daisy Scout leader and love that we can use our school.

Strange lot of scout-hating people here.

OK, I can't agree with having all the boys sit out recess for a recruitment event -- but there is nothing wrong with a non-profit group using school facilities (during non-school hours). I'm not a supporter of the BS policy and I would happily sign a petition to have it retracted, but BS and GS are about citizenship and being responsible and learning and creating a sense of community. Some kids aren't athletic -- BS and GS gives these kids (and the athletic ones too) a chance to belong to a team.

GS and BS and seen by society as positive associations (ever heard that phrase: "he's not a boy scout!"?) for young people. It's really a sad day when people are hating on the kids of GS and the BS.

Because it is seen as a positive influence, BS/GS typically are allowed to set up recruiting tables at Back To School night and they have been allowed to send home flyers as well. Apparently a lot of people want their kids to be in scouts b/c there are waitlists for girls and boys to join a troop/den/pack.

So, OP, I agree that the kids shouldn't have been required to stay for a presentation (or were they just invited????), but you will see a HUGE backlash if public schools ever closed their facilities to scouts (I'm talking about afterhours).

It was a sad day when Boy Scouts started hating on gay people, and teaching intolerance to children. They have no place in public schools.

Why would this be embarrassing to a child who has no idea his parent has spoken to the principal? Unless the culture at this school is such that the principal would broadcast such a thing?

Almost forgot- you require a At this point, right?

We're in C. Virginia too, public school, and have NOT had this in our school. I' curious what district you're in.

PP who mentioned NC's policy here - FWIW, both organizations have religious roots. The Girl Scout Promise still includes a reference to God, although the Girl Scouts have decided to become more inclusive and have children of all faiths and are much more tolerant in other respects as well. If this weren't true, I wouldn't have agreed to be a leader for my daughter's troop.

While I do get what the PP is saying about citizenship and all of that, Boy Scouts have been flaunting their intolerance for many years and it angers me. If I had a boy (which I do not), I'd have a hard time allowing him to participate at this point.

You know there's a certain Religion We're All Supposed to Tolerate which wants to stone gay people in the streets, right?
