Some kids aren't athletic -- BS and GS gives these kids (and the athletic ones too) a chance to belong to a team.

GS and BS and seen by society as positive associations (ever heard that phrase:  "he's not a boy scout!"?) for young people.  It's really a sad day when people are hating on the kids of GS and the BS.

Because it is seen as a positive influence, BS/GS typically are allowed to set up recruiting tables at Back To School night and they have been allowed to send home flyers as well.  Apparently a lot of people want their kids to be in scouts b/c there are waitlists for girls and boys to join a troop/den/pack.

So, OP, I agree that the kids shouldn't have been required to stay for a presentation (or were they just invited????), but you will see a HUGE backlash if public schools ever closed their facilities to scouts (I'm talking about afterhours).[/quote]
