I have talked to 10-12 families and 8 of of them don't want to walk 35-40 minute daily. Not sure why posters are making this assumption that all of RP2 wants to walk 0.7-0.9 miles.

It's not a 0.1-0.2 miles walk. Walking could be luxury for some and burned for others. Depends on distance and also how much time they have to walk. In Elementary, parents have to walk with kids. In middle school it will be a non issue.

Last time I checked EVERY zone walkable in MCPS is 1 mile and not 0.1 mile. That means FARMS in TB1, CG1, and B1 all walk to school, some as far as a mile like every other county school. And talking to TB2/5 parents even further than the mile, they prefer proximity to walk to pick up a sick child or bring them if they are late instead of missing school all together. I think your bogus talks of 12 families is off along with your projected daily walks of 40 minutes??? Come on now. You are pushing it HCA. Just stop already.

Jesus Christ. The point is they knew they were going to RM5 and no one complained or asked to stay at RP. It was deemed a walkable zone as the school was being built in the same location as their former walkable school.

How many FARMs families even knew about this entire process. Let's be honest here.

Now many knew about it and still most don't. Parent's, who know about it, have given their feedback. I interact with many RP2 kids and parents due to my kid playing in Dogwood park with them. There is no strong preference for any school in RP2, but they do prefer having bus. But, again I know only 10-12 families and can't claim to know about entire RP2 view here.

It's pointless to talk about Initially or some random time line.

Do you think the entire RP2 is FARMS? Not even close. But I guess the non FARMS families don’t have a say?

RP2 is 57% FARMs. Every family should have say. FARMs or non-FARMs.

How do you get 35-40 minutes' walk daily? There and back, twice a day?

Parents do not HAVE to walk with kids in elementary school.

You can do the walk yourself and see if you can walk in less than 40 minutes round trip with a young child from RP2 area. I took time to walk myself after all discussions and I picked a random point. You can do it too and not rely on anyone else saying anything.

Go and see few RP2 walk paths and then tell me if you will even allow your kids to walk alone there. Best will be letting you kid walk from RP2 zones to RM#5 and see if you feel comfortable doing them alone.

New pp here. The problem seems to be that people in other RP zones have been lobbying to kick the RP2 kids out of the zone because they can walk. Originally they said that we should wait to hear from them but when only one rep came forward and it was to stay at RP, now it's 100% about walkability. Without that they have nothing to hide behind to disguise their racist and classist dreams. Haven't you noticed that they ignore all arguments to the contrary and continue to spout the same nonsense? Of course they aren't going to walk it themselves, they don't care about kids at RP2 walking, they only care about them not attending "their" school. Because you know, they own that school.

It's a meaningless debate about RP2 walk being safe here. BOE has toured that area and heard from many RP2 residents. No one needs to debate about it. BOE has all information about it.

What did I just say? There are people who think they know what RP2 people want.

Wait, what?? Most kids do walk to school with friends. Not one mom to every child. We are 0.6 miles and my child scooters every day with friends. She 8.

RP2 having some farms doesn’t = dangerous. I know the neighborhood well. It is very safe. The streets will have crossing patrols too. Calm down there. You thinking it is SE DC?

I will highly recommend trying those walk paths yourself. What I say or not say is meaningless.

Agree. This has Hungerford written all over it.

Who said anything about area not being safe due to FARMs or talked about crime rates here?

I will allow my kids to even go 1 miles in scooter depending on what kind of paths they have to take.

Meaningless debate here.

BOE has toured that area and heard from many RP2 parents. Hardly matters what Hungerford or RP5 or any other zone thinks about RP2 and their walk.
