My Doctor husband came home crying yesterday

Yes, docs play a critical role as a member of the overall team but their colleagues see more danger to personal health all the time. Most of my doc friends have pursued the MD route primarily for the income so now when that income in being threatened (see the PP MD whinning) AND they are being overworked with some additional hazards, they can’t deal with it.

You know that salary info is available to us when we choose our specialties, right? None of us on the front line used salary as our deciding factor. We aren't dermatologists being furloughed. We're ER, medicine, critical care and we are directly in front of this thing. I have been coughed and sneezed on, coded vomiting patients, intubated gasping unresponsive patients...you name it. Sometimes I had PPE. Sometimes these people were just dropped at the door. We've cared for them all and will continue to do so. I'm astounded that there's pushback against the idea that I don't want my income cut while I'm risking my life. And yes that sentiment goes for my friends in nursing, cashiers at Safeway, etc. Those of us who can't stay home should be protected, period. And that damn right means economically as well. Because we don't have a choice.

I'm aware that 16m people are jobless. We're preparing now for a second wave of mental health and suicide events directly as a result. And I'll be here for that one too. So can it with the "greedy doctor" bullsh#t. There is no glamour in this job and I'm still proud to do it. But I won't be taken advantage of at the most vulnerable time in my life, when I'm living without my children, wondering if I'm going to go home and spike a fever. The cut to our salaries is not going to my nursing colleagues or to buy PPE for my peers in NYC. It's to shore up the stock loss for a company whose CEO made 7m last year. Let that marinate for a second before telling me to "cool it".

Or better yet, save your ire for your congressperson and get them on the right side of surprise medical billing, prescription drug price transparency, and access to care for low income families. Maybe a coordinated federal response so the next time this happens (and there will be a next time) FEMA isn't seizing mask shipments off loading docks in NYC for redistribution. Yes, that happened. My peers and I are going to work so you can stay home. If you still consider that "whining" you have no idea how real this sh#t is.

Sounds good.

Now stop whining too. You signed up for your job. Most of your health peers are furloughed. You don't have a shortage of ventilators. Hospitalization rates are falling.

Hosp rates in the DMV are not falling, you jabroni. They haven't even peaked. My furloughed peers aren't trained for this and thus are protected. See how that works? Now kindly take your profound lack of respect and go pound sand.

OP, I'm off this thread now but tell your husband we're all right there. None of us are sleeping. Just hug him and be there. It means a lot.

Hugs to you, PP. Hope you sleep soon.

I'll add that I'm the pediatrician from earlier in the thread, and I am not trained for this, and I did not sign up for this, and I am still doing the retraining and standing side by side with my adult medicine colleagues, because they are getting killed my this (metaphorically, not literally so for (yet, but they are testing positive and down for the count. Someone needs to see the patients and write the orders). I'm the POPCoRN rep for my site -- Pediatric Overflow Planning Contingency Response Network -- which is a national collaboration of non-internal-medicine providers trying to figure out how to support our colleagues and address the needs of our community.

Before you ask or insinuate, I don't need to do this. I almost never have time off and have 300+ hours of leave in the bank as a federal employee. I could say sayonara for the next 8 weeks and not have a dent in my paycheck. But I won't. And though I can't help it that some PPs have shitty doctor friends, that's a reflection of who they chose as friends, not the bulk of us.

A lot of good folks are on the front line of the fight. Mom has a CNA that does sidework as a second job caring for Mom but has had to step away to devote herself to her fulltime job at the hospital in her $12.00/hour CNA job in a State of Maryland hospital. She supports herself, her husband and two children on her CNA hourly salary of $12.00/hour. She had to step away from her sidework working for Mom at $20 per hour
due to the Coronavirus needs at the hospital.

Many, many good folks work on the front lines at lesser pay.

Everytime I eat a meal I appreciate the frontline grocery workers too.

Thank you! There are some crazy people on this thread. Most everyone sincerely appreciates everything you and your colleagues are doing. Please hang in there.

Um. Aren't hospitalization rates falling? They sure are in New York. And which never hit anywhere near peak projections.

Most of the DMV hospitals are quiet and under capacity.

Angry doc here; a humble thank you to the peds person above. Please extend that to any of your nursing and tech colleagues in this with us. Your help is so appreciated. My best friend from med school is a pediatrician in Harlem who is now seeing adult patients at LIJ. I gave her a primer the other day on chest pain; she’s been helping me with weight-based dosing for pediatric pneumonia and UTIs. Stay safe and again, thank you.

There is some warped thinking above, but I thank you and for all you are doing and please stay healthy and safe.

fixed that for you

Have you looked at what is happening in countries where the government owns and runs healthcare? Check out the death rates per capita in Italy, France and the UK.

No you idiot. They are falling in NY because of social distancing.

Covid cases have surged in the past 7-10 days in most of the hospitals here in the DMV. We are nowhere near the peak. Hospitals are under capacity because they have cut everything that is elective to prepare for Covid patients.

I thought hospitalization rates aren't falling, but the day to day increase in hospitalizations waa slowing. So, speed still going up. Acceleration going down.

Yes. They are falling.

And DMV hospitals are still well under capacity. Same for hospitals across Maryland.

Most of the medical profession is idle and furloughed. We are not running out of ventilators or ICU beds.

Angry doctor is angry because there wasn't enough PPE as if we had years to plan for a massive virus outbreak. Most other countries with lavish socialized medical systems also don't have PPE systems. I understand why he's angry, but he's also whining. Everyone is suffering to some degree from this virus, from job loses to financial losses to health issues. He's not special or unique. And he signed up for a profession that did warn him he might be on the front lines someday.

we actually did have years to plan for this ... the lack of PPE is criminal.
