No, PP's right. You sound unhinged. No one is advocating for puppy mills or pet stores, but normal people realize that ethical breeders are a humane, reasonable choice. |
I really don't think there is a world in which it is ethical to breed something for which there is more supply than demand and where the extra supply is killed by the hundreds of thousands every year. |
Hey, to each their own. I wish more people rescued, and I wish that every dog could go to a good home. Realistically, it will never happen. I’ll enjoy my gorgeous, perfect, purebred West Virginia shelter dog that cost me nearly nothing. |

Oops! Sorry for the double post. |
Except it isn't |
Exactly right. A dog isn't a car. You don't have to have a certain model. |
This is the “a dog is a dog so any dog will do” and that is not the case as many of us have pointed out repeatedly. |
But you think propping up auctions and puppy mills is ethical? Because that's what you're saying you support. Personally I do not think keeping puppy mills and auctions in business is ethical, but hey, you do you. |
You're awfully close to suggesting that no one should have their own children, given the thousands of children in foster care and abusive/neglectful homes. Which, if that's your position, is yours to own, but you really are extreme. There is SO much else in the world to be extreme about right now. SO MUCH ELSE. |
This is a VERY dangerous attitude that is precisely what leads to families surrendering their pets. Families should be extremely careful in considering what dog to get before getting and what what breeds and temperaments are appropriate for their lifestyle, their personal temperaments, the amount of space they have, etc. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean breeder=best. But to suggest that families should not care about what “model” they are getting is incredibly harmful. I work at a shelter and see it play out all the time, and it’s tragicz |
Two responses. First, you know that what you’re saying is disingenuous. You’re just making excuses. Second, this “you do you” thing that you say on every one of your posts is probably the most annoying thing I see on DCUM. It’s not clever. |
Nice job at word twisting. I said you don’t have to get a “certain” model. I didn’t say that you have to take “any” model. There are plenty of good dogs in shelters. |
Just because there are other things to worry about doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do what you can where you can. Are you suggesting that with all the problems in the world I should just go ahead and litter on a whim, for example? Or that just because you can’t solve all the problems in the world means you shouldn’t try to solve any? Excuses excuses excuses. |
| Do you get this excited about people who pursue fertility treatments instead of adopting? Or, basically anyone who has a biological child instead of adopting? There are HUMANS who need homes too. Do you ask New parents why they decided to have biological children instead of adopt a kid? |
