I totally agree with this change. No reason to have all 9 digits of your SS# on a voter registration form. Interesting this has been in place since 1967.

But, this statement: “This provision is wrong, unconstitutional, and a large part of why nearly one million eligible people in South Carolina remain unregistered to vote,” DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos said in a statement.

..... I question.

Where is she getting the 1 million number from?

I hear nothing in terms of substance, just a lot of race based blaming of white people.

Being reasonable is a cover? She complains about scrubbing voter rolls because people move - people are supposed to vote in the location where they live, and only in the location where they live, how is this prejudicial? The election bodies of the governments are charged with the work of enforcing rules and policies, you can't argue that the enforcement of rules and policies are bad just because you don't like the outcome. A citizen's right to vote comes with the responsibility of following the rules to keeping their voter registration updated.

Rights have responsibilities!!!

Every single European country demands government ID to vote.

You don't want millions of Russians voting in your elections, do you

Earlier today I had to show a driving license to access a local pool.

Voting is way more important.

It is suppression, and it’s racist.

But it seems Republicans are cool with interfering with black people’s ability to vote through whatever means possible.

Voting is a right and accessing a local pool is not.

It was a public pool.

It is a right.

And, as a right, we should be sure that those who show up to vote are actually who they say they are.

If you want to talk voter suppression, perhaps we need to talk to Noah Berlatsky from NBC.

+1.

Voting in US elections is a right of US citizens, not Russian trolls.

Texas has been violating a law that makes it easier to vote for 27 years.

“U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia said the 1993 National Voter Registration Act requires that Texans be able to register to vote at the same time they go online to renew or update a driver’s license.

Visitors to the Department of Public Safety website, however, must click through to another website, download a form, print it out, fill it in and mail it to their county registrar — extra steps that violate the federal law’s “motor voter” provision designed to encourage voter participation, Garcia said in a written order.”

Some good news: Kansas, after Secretary of State Kris Kobach tried to rig his own election for Governor, is contemplating making the Secretary of State position nonpartisan. Also, any Secretary of State would need to resign before running for a partisan office.

“Kobach condemned the bill Wednesday, saying it’s based on “the illusion that a politician elected in an election without party labels somehow loses all preferences and principles.”

I can see examining the elimination and relocation of polling places for racial discrimination/disparate impact, but i.d. is basic.

But what kind of ID? There are number of states in which your hunting license counts as valid ID for voting but your student ID does not.
