+1000 All of this. There is a version of these letters that would not anger people and which would be easy to defend. "He has a young daughter, we have known this family for years, I thought it was important for the court to know the longterm impact of a maximum sentence in this case on his family. The negative impacts of incarceration on the children of the incarcerated is well documented. I do not condone anything Danny did and my heart goes out to the victims in this case." Sure, it's a bit conflicted by life is messy and you know what? It is a tragedy that a 9 yr old girl is going to lose her father over this. She did nothing wrong. They chose not to go that route, they wrote full-throated defenses of Danny Masterson AFTER all of these details of what he did came out and he was convicted by a jury. They deserve every bit of reprobation -- they are defending and excusing a convicted rapist. And I think it's also possible they are trying, in a very carefully worded and likely legally-informed way, to lay the groundwork for discrediting these women as drug-addicts and liars as Danny's appeals move forward. |
The point is that there actually is a ton of evidence in this case, including evidence from the police report filed back when one of the rapes happened. The evidence presented in this case was very strong, better than like 99% of rape cases, because there were multiple victims whose stories corroborated each other, the victims told others about what had happened within days of the rapes occurring (including one filing a police report), and the victim's stories remained consistent for the nearly 20 years since this all happened. That's "hard evidence" in the colloquial sense of the word. Very few cases of any kind of have DNA evidence because it is hard to collect, sometimes hard to test, and often inconclusive. Corroborated eye-witness testimony is actually some of the best possible evidence you can have as a prosecutor. Your opinion is based on a misunderstanding of how criminal justice works. |
+1 This reminds me of saying evolution is "just a theory." That's not how it works. I am not a person who says "believe all women"-- I think that is dangerous and that men have rights to be believed, too. But this man was convicted. The end. The Innocence Project is not taking up this case any time soon. |
I am PP to whom you’re replying. I never said you don’t have a right to your opinion but it’s clear by using the term “hard evidence” shows you lack a knowledge of the legal system and perhaps having more educated and more informed opinions could help you in life. |
Honestly this is what struck me in their video “explanation “ and statement…they are essentially saying “we always stand in support of victims”—except in this case, where we are friends with the guy who did it, soooo….. Even if I could defend why they might offer a character letter, Ashton’s letter of support goes too far in stating he does not believe he poses a danger to the community. Because the point is Ashton would have NO clue!—so that doesn’t matter. Serial killer’s often have BFFs and family members that they don’t kill. They sometimes go to church or tell funny jokes or give money to the needy. But that in no way offers assurance that they aren’t a danger to the community. |
In addition to this, both women told the Church of Scientology what happened and to ask for guidance when it happened and there are written emails and memos trying to hush the women and telling them not to tell. Much of the cover up by the church was done in writing (back in the early 2000s)! |
Yep. Won’t make a bit of difference to the Hollywood crowd. Ashton and Mila will be fine. |
I think that if scientology money and scientology coercion/clout couldn't get him off, then he must have had an airtight case against him. I hope any future judges and jurors on his appeals realize this. |
Nobody is missing any point, we just don’t agree with yours. I don’t think the letters said anywhere that he didn’t commit the crimes he’s accused of. They’re character references that outside of these terrible crimes, for the past 20 years, he’s been a good friend, husband and father to his loved ones. It’s not to negate his crime, it’s to lessen the sentence to the shortest of the options. |
He'll never get another trial. You don't get a re-trial without a constitutional violation and claim, and there isn't one. |

I read a number of the letters and didn't see that any of them stated that he didn't commit the crime. |
Judge and Jury: Danny Masterson is guilty of raping these women via the use of drugs. Ashton and Mila: Danny Masterson is a wonderful person who would never hurt anyone, loathes drugs and would never be around a person who used drugs. PP: They're not negating this terrible crime! ![]() |

These letters, in particular, the ones from Ashton and Mila, were careful crafter PR statements written by publicist experts in character letters. Don't fool yourself that these were written by them, using their own words, from the heart. All of them have the same themes of how Masterson never did drugs, how he aggressively was against his friends doing drugs, how he was so inspirational, a leader and a role model to them, how he was honorable. None of them suggest that he shouldn't have been convicted (saying that he is innocent and the conviction was wrong is a big no no in these kind of letters, of course they're not going to write that). Even his wife's letter doesn't even say this. Their video follow up was a script written by PR. It's all written by publicist who are professionals on what exactly to say. Every single word is intentional, every one. It's politics, I would expect people from the DMV to smell and spot this immediately. |

To the PP's who are being so hard on those who wrote character letters (and it wasn't just Ashton and Mila-it was many others as well). What if you had a convicted friend or family member who was very dear to you and who was currently (at least from what you were able to observe) being a good parent and citizen? You wouldn't feel at all compelled to write a character letter that could possibly reduce their sentence? I think it's very easy to judge from the outside but if you were in that situation you might feel otherwise. |
