Barcroft elementary/ south Arlington crisis

So, spread the word... Meet with the politicians. Let them know we count too. We all say the county does not care, if citizens start acting on the frustrations, then they WILL CARE.

I agree. What happened with the street car should be a lesson to us. People were very loud and very organized in their opposition against it. It forced the county board to back off. We need to put the pressure on the board about concentrated density of low income housing on Columbia Pike and the lack of infrastructure currently in place/planned. We need language that commits geographically diverse housing for those dependent upon it. We aren't saying Not in our back yard. We're happy to have SOME in our backyard. Let's absorb the cost of families in need through out our county.

What are the politicians supposed to do? I mean, really? Elementary schools in south Arlington have, until very recently, been way less crowded than north Arlington schools and had smaller class sizes because they haven't all been at the max, but their scores are lower. The traditional program at Drew has 14 kids in a class and the lowest SOL scores in the county. They have additional staff through Title I. APS added preschool 10 years ago and continues to fund it despite the overcrowding issues. They have very low teacher ratios for kids learning English, which is a lot of the kids in several schools. Given the underlying demographics, what do people want the county to do to make the schools better? (I get that not adding more affordable housing in areas that already have a lot of it will help keep the problems from getting worse, but doesn't solve the problems with the status quo.)

The status quo was actually improving. Many moved here because it was improving. People say, " south Arlington is cheap because it's cheap"
Well, it's not cheap anymore. People say, "'the apartments on the Pike are cheap because they are cheap" Well, the buildings that are market rate that have been built in the last 5 years are not affordable. That's the market at work. The pressure to maintain old, crumbling buildings and loans doled out to build 100 % affordable high rises comes from the board and the policies they enact. This area had been turning around, and the county won't allow it. People have remained quiet, because the class sizes were small, and it was clear gentrification was coming. Apparently the board sees it coming too and it actively trying to stop it.

You people are an absolute joke. You cry cry cry about everything for every body on the government's dime (taxpayers' back). You encourage undocumented immigrants to come and actually reward them with services available to them no questions asked. You get exactly what that causes- overcrowding in schools and poverty confined to ghettoized apartments, which brings down the socioeconomics in that area. Then you're mad. Think long and hard about where you stand and then project that instead of a fake agenda, which you don't really want. Stop being NIMBY! If you don't want overcrowded schools and concentrated poverty than stop voting for policies that cause that very thing. Maybe now that your child's education is on the chopping block and it is in your backyard you'll back away from being a hypocrite. It's about time!

I think you two are missing the point, which is that decisions affecting the south alone are being made by the richer and more populous north.

I don't think education for children born on US soil is a reward. Personally, I think you're just shoehorning your favorite rant here, when it may not actually apply. I don't its crazy to want a good education for your children or all of the children in your community. No one is advocating that certain children be turned away or given something more...

And why would that be a problem. Oh, because you're NIMBY! Just glad you're getting exactly what you asked for! If you order a Midori Sour at the bar, that's what the bartender will bring you. Sour grapes after the fact is just silly.

And the comedy continues! Go on- continue with your tree-hugging! Just hope it's your family that gets less and not someone else who understands what's going on. One day the light bulb will go off for you and your ideology of Shangri-la (money grows on trees and everyone has a right to everything) will get tossed out like the trash it is. Maybe that time is on its way! And it feels so good. There's nothing like liberals getting a taste of their own medicine. All of a sudden "there's a crisis", etc... and libs are screaming that the sky is falling because it's their own kids to will lose due to liberal policies. GOOD!!!!

What are you talking about?

As for why it would be a problem, how about you give me all your passwords and info and I'll handle your finances for the next year. What could possibly go wrong for you?

Well then, PPs will miss the point wherever they go, won't they?

I'm not understanding where the problem is. At the end of the day you have all of the children getting something much-deserved- an education. Surely, you wouldn't suggest that poorer children get the shaft? Or would you. Why would it be okay to take away their education, so you with greater resources, could have more options. You fake liberals are the most disgusting of all. You preach about making sure the playing field is leveled for all.... until there's a question of your child's playing field. Then suddenly, the hell with poorer children and families. I think I'll stick with the repubs. At least they're in your face that they don't believe there's enough resources and poor families will have to start putting up (ie. contributing) or shut-up. In the end, honesty is always the best policy in my book!

Oh shut-up! Or better yet, explain what's wrong with poor kids in your hood cramming into your schools. Where else would you have them go? Of course, your not suggesting your kid deserves more than them. How does that jive with your political philosophy of all kids deserve the same thing, etc... Not so much, huh?! How you like them apples now, loser!
