You will not get into Oyster-Adams for middle unless you move into the boundary. You just will not. It is so painful to read these posts from elementary parents (or PK parents, or people who aren't even in the schools yet). I have become the person I used to hate on DCUM but now I get it -- it's not cynicism, it's just realism. Everything you hope will work out or improve or turn out better than people say it might? Won't. Get with the program. |
The charters are pulling a critical mass of kids out of dc public schools because the dcps middle schools are very bad and seem to be getting worse (ed tech). |
We were in the round this year that applied for a bunch of the immersion charters. Yu Ying has a brand new early learning campus and seems to be doing great; MV is about to open a new early learning campus and is doing great; Stokes is still very much in demand. The DCI feeder possibility was certainly a benefit for many of us who applied, but I think our lists would have been much the same if DCI didn't exist as an option. FWIW, of the immersion charters I toured, I would have been happy putting my kid in any of them. There are Hill families who happily send their kids to Global Citizens (Spanish/Chinese, in Ward 6 starting next year) and Houston (Spanish, in Deanwood). |
Where did you end up? We may be in the moving category, after over a decade on the Hill, and not thrilled about it at all. Lived in three other neighborhoods in NW previously and like the Hill way more. But schools…. |
We got in a charter but might still move for high school. Not interested in the what we consider to be weak application schools. Love the Hill but love my children more. |
But are DC schools declining more than other public schools due to ed tech? |
Can't guarantee great writing skills anywhere, including at private. We are supplementing writing to ensure our kids actually learn it correctly. We also supplement math. We have chosen to supplement and stay in DCPS instead of stretching for private, at least in middle school, and then have no budget left over for any needed supplementation. It's a choice and I know others wouldn't make it, including if you have demanding jobs etc or if private isn't as much of a stretch. |
| Weird vibes on this board lately. |
Where/how are you supplementing writing? It’s a massive weakness for one of my kids, and I’d love a rec |
This is why so much of the info is unhelpful on this forum. There is the EPIC Program (an honors cohort for 9th and 10th graders) and the IB program at Eastern. An accelerated track within the school exits. |
There are two other IB programs in dc. Banneker and dci. Both are much stronger. |
It hilarious to me that you’d say “can’t guarantee good writing anywhere” as a justification for what goes on at dcps middle schools. You need a tutor for remedial learning. |
I think more people are realizing that they can’t move due to job instability and are stuck with dcps only to find dcps is terrible and getting worse with Ed tech and just the lack of accountability from dcps. |
What do they do all day at dcps if you’re basically sending them to a private school afterwards and on weekends? |
I can’t afford to move anymore but I understand Ed tech (amplify)is going to hit all math and ela students in middle schools. Not true for moco. Not true for Fairfax and Arlington. |
