Awaiting ED decisions — how are you feeling?

I’m handling child number three completely differently. Not building up the process of finding a dream school. We will be very much downplaying the importance of finding some elusive perfect fit for her. Just find a couple options that are doable for her where she’ll be happy and not reach for some brass ring.

This is the way. We made a point of hyping target schools not reaches, and pointing out pros and cons of all of them. Does a kid zero favors to promote the idea of a dream school (which is silly anyway).

You can do this and also utilize ED, assuming you do have a preference. Having a preference is not the same as a “dream school.” DD applied ED to UVA. Already has an admit to Delaware and Pitt. Also applied to VT and W&M. If she gets into UVA great, but if not she will have some great other choices.

+1. DS applied ED to Duke, and also applied EA to 10 other schools. Already has one admit so lots of the tension is already gone. And there is no frantic scramble to wrap up RD applications now.
The extra application fees are a drop in the bucket compared to not having stress this month.

hate this week. My DC ED' to UVA and the waiting is awful. She absolutely did everything they asked but the numbers make it seem hopeless.

We are very nervous in our house (although not showing it to our child). They do not hear back until next week and the waiting is hard. The ED school is a high reach for everyone so we are not terribly optimistic.

Good grief. You have the patience of a toddler. ED decisions come out super early as it is. I'm glad I don't live at your house. Are you the type who puts up Christmas decorations weeks before Thanksgiving?

Why do we have so many Karens in our society? This board is for parents to vent. Weirdo.

Use of the term “Karen” is very racist!

People usually think of their HOA president as a Karen. I don't think it refers to race, or sex, or age. It could be a 22 year old young URM male. Karen is entitled, always tries to control situations that don't involve them. Rude as fuxx.

+1

It’s not racist.

I thought the PP saying it was racist was making a joke. Only in the Trump era is anything that may even suggest criticism of white people is "racist." Which cracks me up because racism isn't really racism if it is directed towards are race that holds majority power. It's just bias. But maga wants to make "racism against whites" a thing and redefine racism. So, I thought PP was just making a Trumplandia joke.

NP.

Yes, agree. Thank you.

It's rather shocking how many on DCUM claim to have earned undergraduate or graduate degrees, yet they fail to understand BIPOC peoples are incapable of being racist, by definition.

DP.

As if the definition of such terms is objective rather than subjective?

It’s astonishing how many people on DCUM have earned degrees, yet they fail to understand that neither their opinion nor their orthodoxy is the same thing as fact.

We did not promote anything. My kid visited some schools, researched and chose them. We discussed codes and how they had the stats for anywhere - it’s a lottery at the top. They wanted to play it. They applied to several T10-20s and were accepted to several.

As long as you explain the odds —and I always told my kids: it’s not personal, it’s business. They don’t even know you….you can play the wheel and not get too disappointed.

My kids were not willing not to aim big.

The dream school thing is something that just sort of happened to my first two kids. They each got fixated on a specific school and that became a motivator for them, so over the next 18 months it took on a life of its own. Both schools were unique in location so it wasn’t easy to see a door number 2 that wasn’t a disappointment. We let it happen because it gave them the ability to set a long term goal, dream and go for it.

I’m not falling for it again. It’s a lottery ticket and all the planning in the world won’t necessarily get you there.

It worked out for us. But it’s just a word of caution to parents out there when trying to manage a teenager. For my third child we are taking a different approach and I think she will be happier for it.

my kids both did "10 great schools" lists.

it just so happened that they had one rise to the top and that's what you do ED. no gaming on "this one gives me the best boost" etc.

What 10 other EA schools did you do already, which would also mean no frantic scramble if Duke doesn’t work out? Sure, you may have a rolling and applied to somewhere like UVA (ea) or UChicago, but if Duke doesn't work out, is your kid’s plan to not apply any more reach schools?

I'm curious about this as well. My Duke ED candidate also applied EA to MIT and UChicago and UNC and considered (but did not apply) to UMichigan. In the middle of many RD applications since all of the foregoing are reach schools for everyone.

Does anyone know if Harvard requested Q1 transcripts for REA?
