Too much stress. I’ve done this ED nonsense with 2 kids now. I’m handling child number three completely differently. Not building up the process of finding a dream school. We will be very much downplaying the importance of finding some elusive perfect fit for her. Just find a couple options that are doable for her where she’ll be happy and not reach for some brass ring.
This is the way. We made a point of hyping target schools not reaches, and pointing out pros and cons of all of them. Does a kid zero favors to promote the idea of a dream school (which is silly anyway).
You can do this and also utilize ED, assuming you do have a preference. Having a preference is not the same as a “dream school.” DD applied ED to UVA. Already has an admit to Delaware and Pitt. Also applied to VT and W&M. If she gets into UVA great, but if not she will have some great other choices.
+1. DS applied ED to Duke, and also applied EA to 10 other schools. Already has one admit so lots of the tension is already gone. And there is no frantic scramble to wrap up RD applications now. The extra application fees are a drop in the bucket compared to not having stress this month.
What 10 other EA schools did you do already, which would also mean no frantic scramble if Duke doesn’t work out? Sure, you may have a rolling and applied to somewhere like UVA (ea) or UChicago, but if Duke doesn't work out, is your kid’s plan to not apply any more reach schools?
I'm curious about this as well. My Duke ED candidate also applied EA to MIT and UChicago and UNC and considered (but did not apply) to UMichigan. In the middle of many RD applications since all of the foregoing are reach schools for everyone.
