They're the poster angry that the school board shut down people buying their way into TJ before the admission change. They try to make it about "merit," but what they want is the opposite. |
Waitlisted Not a feeder 4.0 unweighted Algebra 1 HN Black Economically Disadvantaged Also, is taking Geometry HN over the summer a bad idea? I recently realized you can accelerate like this. |
It is intense and we did it over summer of 2020 when Covid was at a peak and we did not have any other plans. But the course is very well structured. If student wants to spend 7-8 hours a day to learn the material then it is fine. It was surprisingly more time-consuming than my kid expected, who is very strong in math, having qualified later on for USAMO and MOP. |
What do you mean, “what?!” - do you think it was republicans who did this? https://reason.com/2024/04/04/seattle-is-getting-rid-of-gifted-schools-in-a-bid-to-increase-equity/ - do you think it was republicans who eliminated NYC’s version of AAP ? It was the democrats, PP. democrats: just like Reid and every single member of the FCPS school board. |
This is a good point: it was democrats who came up with, and implemented the failed “Lucy Calkins” reading curriculum, which damaged the education of so many children. Democrats implemented the failed “whole language” approach before the Calkins debacle. Both failures sought to displace phonics, which had always worked well (and still does). |
Can you provide any evidence that supports your theory? |
While you are at it, could you please also provide proof that the sun will rise tomorrow? |
Yes. Taking it in the summer is a horrible idea. We registered my son for the class over the summer and it's basically self taught. You have a quiz everyday and you need to teach yourself the WHOLE THING. We ended up pulling him from the class before the deadline to drop the class with no penalty. We had changed travel plans just so he can take it. It was the worst. |

For the parent thinking of having their kid in Geometry honors over the summer, don't do it. Foundational principles are so important and rushing through them in the summer isn't good idea for long term success in math. Your kid is on a fine trajectory for advanced math in high school, no need to push them through. Even TJ seems to be distancing itself from the summer math programs and pushing for kids to have taken the year long course.
A better option for your kid would be to take summer PE/Health 9 and get it out of the way so that your kid can take a fun class to balance out their schedule or take an easy AP class like intro to comp science. |
I did this years ago. It was in person, and I had zero regrets. |
In person would be very different then an online class with about an hour of time with the teacher. From what I ahve read, that is not even an hour of instruction. The students are supposed to learn the material on their own, complete 1-2 quizzes a day, complete a test a day, and complete their homework. I think the final exam is in person to make sure that there is no cheating on the final. I would still discourage taking Geometry in the summer with an in-person teacher, but I fall into the camp that it is good for kids to have some down time during the summer. Kids taking HS math in MS are ahead in math, I don't understand the desire to be even further ahead, but that is our philosophy. DS will be in Geometry as an 8th grader. He'll take Calculus as a Junior. I don't see why ne needs to be in Calculus as a sophmore. He'll use this summer to go backpacking, attending some camps, visit family, and hang out at the pool. We know other families have their kids in geometry and wish the kids the best completing their course work and enjoying the summer that they will have. |
Did you fail to notice the links posted up-thread, re: Seattle and NYC? And, Lucy Calkins was supported and encouraged by Columbia University, which isn’t exactly a hot-bed of MAGA philosophy, as anyone knows. But you go on trying to gaslight people. |
Thanks for all the advice but btw I am the kid. I want to get a higher math level because I want it to look better on collage applications and I like math. My sibling went to UVA full ride so I know I'll prob go to a good school either way with one year ahead but I feel like geometry is the best to take over the summer if I opt for that. I got a workbook book thing called everything you need to know about geometry in one big fat notebook and although I only finished half of it since March. I think I am able to handle geometry hn over the summer. My current math is easy and both my siblings have summer break from collage so they could help if I need help on a question etc (they are really good students). Im also kind of worried because I'm kinda a procrastinator and do everything last minute and don't study... As long as I get an A I don't really care and continue with it. Also to be fair I got a 584 on sol this year but last year I got 517 but they were both algebra and geometry can be pretty different. Other info is I do all my work and pay attention in school fully but I just can't at home . ... Any advice? Thank you again! |
