Is the Target Boycott Really Effective?

Walmart has really upped their game. Stores are bright and clean with a lot of staff around.

Target always seems to be understaffed. They don’t have as much stuff and are generally more expensive. Their self checkout lines are limited compared to the rows and rows at Walmart.

5 years ago we always shopped at Target to avoid the “people of Walmart.” Now, I see all types of SES at Walmart.

It’s a perfect storm against Target. Boycott and economic influences affecting people’s behavior.

You must have an upscale Walmart. Our is will very low SES. We stock up once a year on cleaners/household products/OTC meds and get the hell out.

Some of them are quite nice actually and a lot of them are being upgraded. If it’s in a rougher area the annoying thing is all of the makeup is locked up. But it’s cheaper than target and has a larger food section and overall more necessities. Their autocare section is larger than target, and I have noticed that they have more “working clothes” than target, think work boots and nonslip shoes. If the economy goes down the drain we will all end up there.

Unlike Walmart, most people don’t actually grocery shop at target, just grab a few things, where as Walmart is the actual grocery store for a lot of people. In an economic downturn Walmart will probably be able to persist much longer.

Before any of this, I don't know why they pivoted into groceries. It's a low margin industry that depends on volume. The target grocery section was never crowded and always smells like spoiled dairy, because they couldn't move product fast enough.

Looks like they have been very effective!

Where exactly do you suppose people are shopping instead of Target?

Walmart? Ownership supports and donates massively to Republicans.

Amazon? Bezos. ‘Nuff said.

The Target boycott is actively counterproductive—it’s literally giving more $ to Trump sycophants.

So stupid.

Costco literally has everything. If it's not on the shelves in your store, just log onto their website and 9 times out of 10, they have it online and it will ship to you for free. Their online selection is pretty massive.

I've been buying the things I can't find at Costco at Giant, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, etc.

My teen does Ulta. Also, Wegmans has some good sales on the same beauty stuff that Target sells. It requires a bit more work to find those deals, but yeah, Wegmans has been pretty decent.

Funny you left out Costco. There is popcorn by the TV so you can watch your FOX News. We won't disturb you. Go on now.

Funny that Target never believed their customers were the people who did not want to shop at Walmart. I also did not shop at Walmart--for reasons different than yours--but the point is that I went to Target instead.

Now, I have not shopped at Target since last December.

If the MAGA dude in this thread thinks that is stupid, I don't care. It's not his business what I do.

I'm spending less overall due to Trumpflation.

Yes.

The boycott has been effective. Huge losses and CEO stepping down.

Earlier this year, Target announced it was rolling back its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, joining several other companies which have scaled back such efforts amid pressure from the Trump administration and several conservative groups. However, this rollback triggered a backlash and a boycott against Target and criticism from civil rights activists. The boycott appears to have had an impact, as RetailBrew reported that foot traffic at Target was down 3.1% in Q2 2025. While announcing the previous quarter’s earnings report in May, Cornell acknowledged the backlash to company’s DEI rollback was one of the factors behind a revenue decline.

You didn't understand the boycott. We knew Walmart and Amazon weren't sh!t. We never expected anything from them. As an FYI, the Walmart grandchildren are very liberal and their foundation supports lots of climate organizations. Target slapped us in the face. The moment they got a chance to turn on us, they did. Plus, lots of other places to shop. I go to the grocery store and Costco. Plus, I've been a Penzey fan forever.

For all those people who said it wouldn't work. Here you go. Now we have to get serious about boycotting other brands. I don't even miss Target.

I know!
Haven’t been in over six months and the one time I thought they might have something, I decided I could do without. No angst at all.

Where we shop there's a Target and a CostCo right next to each other. Often the CostCo parking lot is so full that we have to park in the mostly empty Target lot and walk over.
