If her kid was at an Ivy, she'd have said. Def not HYPSM. |
Many magnet kids with Weighted GPAs around 4.85 were rejected. 12-14 APs, mostly 5's or 4's |
What school? |
Agriculture |
My kids who’s a senior says many from Poolesville were rejected. My kid attends a different high school. |
| Don't know about this year, but definitely last year some Blair Magnets were rejected. 2 that were NMSF among them….. |
So, so glad that my DC will be leaving this toxic rat race where 1 point difference for a 98% ACT is “squeak”ing in. Also, learn how to spell troll. |
Same-- can't imagine why people are flocking South! |
| From what I've gathered from UMD admissions your SAT/ACT isn't as important as people here make them out to be. It's holistic, which means sometimes it's about institutional priorities and maybe your kid doesn't match those. |

It's because your kid attended a W and lives in MoCo. My TO kid with a 4.2 was accepted. Not MoCo. Getting a 4.7 at their school isn't possible, so 4.2 was top 10%. The MoCo GPAs are very inflated. |
It's not just about the stats, and there are only so many spaces. Honestly, there are bigger things to worry about than this. My kid did not get honors, and I am glad. I don't see the point in the extra work. |
Just wait until little Johnny gets rejected from jobs! Watch out, Boeing and Lockheed and Amazon! The parents of college Facebook groups are coming for you. Elon Musk is quaking in his loafers! |
I think this is probably the case in any suburban area with lots of highly educated parents. These kids are all capable...UMD can't take them all though. |
If this is true, it’s because a 4.85 for a magnet kid puts them at the bottom of the magnet class, and UMD takes kids from all schools and programs. A 4.85 means about 1/8 of your grades are Bs, or one class a semester (my senior had a 5.0 until taking gym this year, the only unweighted class). Not a lot of the magnet kids have that many Bs. |
