It was the Dems who pushed the early debate, hoping to get a "gotcha moment" and blew up in their faces. The release also intimates, as I have previously commented, there is no guarantee the DNC won't try to swap out Harris when their internal polling shows her getting crushed. But there's also no reason to think she will.

Look, the easiest way to explain this, that you're avoiding doing, is tos ay that it was an enormous misstep for Trump to agree to an early debate and to hold an early convention. He got worked over, hard and he doesn't want to have it happen again.

but it's also real to say that, for the first few hours after Biden dropped out, there was some chance Harris would not be the nominee, but now it's more of a done deal than Trump's nomination. Trump's statement was pure gaslighting, an attempt to convince Dems that they don't really back Harris, but the problem is that they do. For gaslighting to work, you have to have some doubt in the target's mind that maybe they're wrong. And there just isn't. There's nobody of any significance in the Dem party who opposes Harris, and there's an insanely positive reaction from the grassroots.
