McLean from 9 all the way up to 5 seems little big a jump in one week(despite some strong jockeying by McLean faithful - certainly deserve to move up but wins have been close plus not sure battlefield deserves to fall that far. Certainly bump up over Westfields who will likely fall out altogether but toss up vs Langley (h-to-h win vs overall strength of schedule) and ? knows about freedom. but probably results in #6 or #7 at best. |

Week of April 17 -2023 VA Boys 6A Rankings
1. Yorktown (7-1) Last Week: Def. Wakefield 15-3, Def. Washington-Liberty 16-7 Analysis: As predicted, Yorktown cruised to two easy wins and strengthened its hold on first place with the Battlefield loss. Herndon and Patriot coming up are both decent teams, but neither should be a real threat to beat the Patriots. This Week: Herndon (4/18), Patriot (4/20) 2. Madison (6-1) Last Week: Def. Chantilly 16-2 Analysis: Easy win against Chantilly and a week off before facing Centreville, who should not be able to hang with the Warhawks. Tough matchup with Landon on Wednesday. The Bears knocked off highly-ranked Bullis last week, although they looked completely outmatched against Georgetown Prep. Madison likely cannot counter the athleticism and skill of Landon, but it will be a good measuring stick to see how the top of 6A matches up with a top-five DMV private. This Week: Centreville (4/17), Landon (4/19), Woodson (4/22) 3. Lake Braddock (9-1) Last Week: Def. West Springfield 19-7, Def. Battlefield 10-3, McLean 14-12 Analysis: Lake Braddock rebounded nicely and got three big wins, including a dominant performance against Battlefield. The defense stepped up nicely and completely shut the Bobcats down. The game with McLean was closer than expected, with the Highlanders racking up 12 goals. We think this is a function of LB not being completely dominant and McLean being better than initially projected. Still one of the best teams around when they are on their game and a legitimate title contender. Easy week ahead with just one game against an average Fairfax team that should not present any difficulty. This Week: Fairfax (4/18) 4. Robinson (5-2) Last Week: No games Analysis: Rams were idle last week, but they move up one spot with Battlefield floundering against Lake Braddock. Big week ahead with West Potomac and Battlefield on tap. If the Rams win both, it is likely shaping up to be a four team race this season. This Week: West Potomac (4/18), Battlefield (4/22) 5. McLean (10-1) Last Week: Def. Langley 9-8 (2OT), Def. Westfield 10-6, Def. Wakefield 12-4, Lake Braddock 14-12 Analysis: Unbelievable 10-0 start for the Highlanders with a rare win against cross-town rival Langley in double overtime, and a solid win against Westfield. Finally took a loss when they ran into Lake Braddock, but played them tough. McLean gets a nice bounce back game against Marshall and then a long break before facing Yorktown. Hopefully they can use the time to get healthy and not rusty. Biggest debate this week was McLean or Battlefield at the #5 spot. With eleven games under their belt, we know what McLean is as a team better at this point, and their performance against LB was much better. This Week: Marshall (4/18) 6. Battlefield (4-2) Last Week: Lost to Lake Braddock 10-3, Def. Freedom 12-4, Def. Westfield 8-2 Analysis: Battlefield came out flat in their first real test and got steamrolled by Lake Braddock. Good recovery wins against Westfield and regional rival Freedom. The big drop for Battlefield was based on a combination of them being ranked too high to start the season and our view that we just don’t have enough information yet to keep them in the top five. Two easy games to start off the week, before a big weekend showdown with Robinson. With a win against Robinson, Battlefield can show that they belong with the big boys. This Week: Unity Reed (4/17), Osbourn Park (4/19), Robinson (4/22) 7. Langley (5-2) Last Week: Lost to McLean 9-8 (2OT), Def. Marshall 18-1, Def. Sidwell Friends 14-6 Analysis: The long layoff seemed to hurt Langley and they stumbled against McLean, playing with fire in their third overtime game and ending up on the losing end. The Saxons crushed Marshall and dominated Sidwell Friends in a game that was called early for weather and was never close. Langley should cruise to a win against W-L this week before they face #1 seed Yorktown the following week. This Week: Washington-Liberty (4/18) 8. Oakton (3-4) Last Week: Def. South Lakes 11-3 Analysis: Easy win against South Lakes, but a challenging week ahead with Westfield and West Potomac on the schedule, and Madison looming the following week. With a losing record, Oakton needs to win both games this week to stay in the top ten, as they are still clinging to their spot based in part on their close game with Lake Braddock. This Week: Westfield (4/17), West Potomac (4/22) 9. Freedom South Riding (6-3) Last Week: Def. Colonial Forge 12-4, Lost to Battlefield 12-4 Analysis: Freedom beat Colonial Forge easily but didn’t put up much of a fight against Battlefield. They have four easy games ahead and then finish with John Champe, who looks to be good but not great. Freedom could end the season 11-3 but still not be a legitimate contender. Region B does not look to be very strong this year, and the state champ is likely to from Region C or D. This Week: Osbourn (4/17), Broad Run (4/19) 10. Westfield (4-3) Last Week: Def. Centreville 9-6, Lost to McLean 10-6, Lost to Battlefield 8-2 Analysis: Tough week for the Bulldogs as they drop games to McLean and Battlefield. Huge matchup for them against Oakton tonight. These two teams should be evenly matched and play a similar style. It should be a low-scoring and close game. With two losses this week, Westfield could have dropped out, but they beat challengers South County and Herndon this season head-to-head and Patriot and Cosby have no quality wins yet. This Week: Oakton (4/17), Colgan (4/22) Honorable Mention: Patriot, Cosby, South County, West Potomac, Herndon |
| Thanks yet again for the good work in compiling and explaining! Looking forward to some great games this week and next week! |
| Thanks - much better than LaxNumbers. Head to head has to matter. With similar records, there is no way Lake Braddock can be ahead of Madison, Oakton ahead of Langley, or Langley ahead of McLean right now. |
| I kinda love these weekly rankings so thank you! Analysis and explanations spot on as always |
| Fantastic weekly rankings/analysis as always, well done. Thanks for all the effort it takes to do this. Hard to argue with any of the analysis - perfectly describes season thus far. Look forward to games this week. |

Battlefield 15 - Unity Reed 0
Madison 15 - Centreville 4 Oakton 12 - Westfield 3 |
| Pretty bad showing by Westfield and they probably drop out now. Who takes their place? If WestPo knocks off Oakton they probably jump in. Patriot if they give Yorktown a game? Cosby? |

Wow - the MadLax ranker has McLean at #20 in the DMV now, ahead of Robinson.

| I am not surprised by the Oakton score. They are a good team that played a really hard early season schedule. I expect them to rack up a bunch of wins the second half of the season. They are better than their record reflects. |
They definitely did have a rough start with losses only to top 10 teams (Langley, Yorktown, Robinson and Lake Braddock). Expecting them to go 5-1 to finish the regular season, with an outside chance of upsetting Madison. |
