Which elementary schools go to 4:10 pm? |
I'd rather my ES kid get out later than my HS kid. It would be an issue for families whose siblings do child care and for HS kids with activities, work, and responsibilities at home. You simply don't get it and want it for your convince. You don't get that HS kids volunteer, in activities and not just MCPS activities, homework, jobs... so if they aren't getting home till 4:30 they'd be going to bed at 12-1 PM every night to get their homework done. My kid is still up doing homework as they had activities after school. |
None of them, the later tier ends at 3:50 pm. If you have a late bus, you might still be waiting for it at 4:10. Because the schedule problem is a bus transportation problem, which can't be fixed without either more buses/drivers or fewer students who get bused. |
Most of the people here don't get it, PP. Who would have thought that there are actual teenagers who have to babysit their younger siblings or work after school to help their families? |
That's great but it's not just about you. |
That doesn't mean we can't exaggerate to make our complaints sounds better! |
DP. Precisely. It’s not about any one person. |
When I was in Mcps high school began around 710am |
What time do you want them to start? The same buses have to serve all of the age populations. Also, the sports start early after high school ends. |
You can always go private. |
Who watches these kids in the morning? Do they all have parents that don't have to start their commute until after 9am? I'm also curious the percent of families that rely on high schoolers to watch their ES students. I just don't know that many families with that large of an age gap between kids, and the percent of them that cannot provide alternative care would only be a subset of that. This is a case where MCPS could throw some money at subsidized aftercare for qualifying families. They waste so much money on stupid programs. |
Have you read either of the previous two bell times reports? That might be a place to start. |
They drop them off to sit outside the school until it opens. That is not an option in the afternoon. Look, I get it. Studies have shown that later bell times for teenagers increases test scores even when controlling for other factors. MCPS could use an easy win right now to bump scores. But they’ve decided the downsides do not make up for a marginal increase in scores and mental health. That’s a valid opinion too. |
10:14 again- the only way I could ever see MCPS changing on this is if the tide turns against them, i.e. other area districts make the switch en masse. IIRC only Loudon has tried so far. |
Many other districts start later than MCPS. DCPS, Loudon, Arlington, Howard, etc all start later. Most states start high school later than MCPS. But somehow people here think logistical issues are unsolvable in MCPS. Makes me feel like our county is backward thinking and not solution oriented |
